    which brand

    Hello to all,

I'm looking for a heavy barreled bolt action for general shooting off the bench and was wondering if anyone has shot the Savage model 10 or one of the Mossbergs??

I'm kinda on a budget so let say no more than 1K including and nice scope to make it sniperish.

I have a Savage and a Rem and both are good.
If you can try holding both or others and pick the one you like. I have shot Mossberg's but not heavy barreled ones. The ones I shot did just fine so I think a heavy barrel one would be fine also.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Savage has a great wealth of aftermarket support if you desire to customize it.
Also they are very accurate out of the box....just don't feed it cr@p ammo !!

Find a good used savage 10/ 11 for around $3-400 and use the rest for a good scope.

Or buy a new Savage stealth for $1k. It comes with a scope, trued action, and nice aluminum chassis. Practice on that and save up for a nicer scope down the line.

            thank you all

            fellows,

Thank you all for your postings. This coming weekend I might head to Turner's or Bass Pro and check prices assuming it doesn't rain anymore.

In the mean time I'll keep looking at the You Tube videos.

Take a look at the Howa's and the Tikka's too, very fine rifles for under $1k.

I would go to ammo bros before going to Bass Pro.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

I went with the Mossberg MVP Patrol in 7.62 because I can interchange magazines with my M1A. It's a nice rifle, particularly for the price. Buy the rifle bare and put on your own quality scope.

I got mine on sale for under $500.

                      Barreled Action $450 http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts...prod94611.aspx

Bell and Carlson Stock $300 http://www.midwayusa.com/product/142...ynthetic-black

                      SWFA Fixed 10 power scope $300 https://swfa.com/catalog/product/vie...-riflescope-1/

That puts you just over $1100 with taxes and fees. That is about the best budget friendly solid setup you'll get for around $1000. A Savage, Remington, or Tikka rifle in the $500-$600 range will come with a plastic molded stock. No where as nice or ridged as the Bell and Carlson. The SWFA will allow you to learn how to use a ranging reticle, have good reliable tracking, and decent glass. Run this setup for a while and upgrade as you go.

Sorry, may have been a little misleading on my post. My local Dick's had it right at $1k recently.

If Ammo Bros has it for cheaper then that where I'll go. I know there not far away.
