Remington 700 in .308....

And that's where I can't decide. I think I have come down to the VTR or the Varmint. VTR is 22" barrel while the Varmint model is 26". VTR has some bonus bits like a bipod and picatinny rail for a scoupe.

Damn. I just perused the website again....now I want the XCR but it's almost twice the price.

What do you want out of it?

If limited to those three, I would get theXCR and save having to buy all of those parts separately later.

If you are new to bolt actions spend less on the rifle, get decent glass, and invest in ammofor practice.

Hunting? Not the XCR.

I would lean toward a 5R. It looks to be several hundred less than the XCR, and all you need to add is a trigger, which the XCR (and all the other 700's, I believe) needs as well.

The most accurate 700 I ever bought was a Varmint SF, a stainless .308 with a fluted 26" varmint profile barrel. That gun also needed the new trigger, and absolutely needed a new stock, which brought the price up to right around the 5R neighborhood, but mine is a legitimate 0.5 MOA shooter with handloads. 0.5 MOA on demand, not once a day.

A buddy had a VTR, and that gun was definitely possessed by some evil spirits. It never shot very well, the bolt tended to lock up to where you needed a tool to cycle it, and it did not always cock reliably. That's a small sample size, but I don't see triangular barrels taking over the world, either.

The funky fluting on the VTR's usually hurts the accuracy.
Of the two you mentioned, get the SPS varmint and then drop it into a better stock.

Honest, good advice...

I've seen more VTRs and their shoots, shoot poorly than good (especially as they get warm). The extra for the 5R is way better spent in glass, adjustable stock, trigger, ammo and lessons... of course this other stuff is were the expense is..

I just picked one up.

Mile High Shooting had the best price I could find (shipped) and had free fed ex 2 day shipping at the time. They shipped it out the next day for me. Of course it then turned out I couldn't make it to pick it up til today but if you want a 5r I'd give them a call as they only had a few left.

If your the Mike The Wino from Sonoma county go to Circle S Ranch out of Two Rock and the owners son has the XCR.
He is there most days and will most likely let you shoot it. His name is Billy.

Ruger American Predator in .308 ($400), with a Primary Arms 4-14x44 ill. mil dot ($160), SWFA 30mm low rings ($30), Tacfire muzzle brake ($25), Caldwell 6-9" bipod ($30), with the original stock cut and painted with DupliColor "OEM Trunk" paint in Gray and Black splatter effect ($7).

$652 in the entire rig. Took it to the 100 yard range in Linden on Sunday (3/5) and it shot under 1 MOA in a fairly heavy crosswind off the bipod. I'm sure I'll get her to 1/2 MOA on a still day on the sled. For reference I was shooting 168 and 178 grain Hornady Match.

Not going to get much better for $900+ out of that 5R.
