    Looking to get a .308

I am looking into purchasing a .308 in the next month or so.

Most time will be spent at the range for some fun. Nothing competitive, but I may have opportunities to hunt deer and boar.

I am thinking the Remmington 783 as it seems decent enough and a great price point.

I prefer the look of a walnut stock, but I believe the synthetic is lighter and looks good in a camo finish

What are the overall advantages and disadvantages to each?

No experience with the 783. Have you thought about the Savage hog hunter? Price is decent and I've read good things about it. Played with one at a LGS and it seems like a quality piece. The stock irons with the front gold bead sight were nice too.

After some research.....I picked up a Mossberg Youth 308...very light/very short/1 moa accuracy to 300 yds with Hornady ammo...easy to carry for hiking/hunting.......Bought from Buds with lifetime guarantee for about $270 on sale. Very pleased with build/looks/weight/shooting comfort. Read reviews on Buds for the different models and review youtube videos on Mossberg Patriot.

Check out the Winchester XPR. It has an awesome trigger for a cheap rifle.

783 is a very good rifle. I got one in 308, didn't care for plastic stock so I got a Boyd's laminate classic stock.

Skip the 783 and get a Savage 10, Howa, Vanguard, Mossberg, Ruger American.

If i were looking for a budget 308 id go savage or ruger american.

Most likely ruger american. They are giving those away right now

OK, stock isn't an issue and will end up being what it is.

What makes the ruger stand out?

What about the Mossberg Patriot, it has a fluted barrel, I've read that's not good if you want to reload your own rounds?

Someone is lying to you about the fluted barrel.

Wood stocks are heavier. That's better for the range, plus they look awesome. Light synthetic stocks are more durable and probably better to carry around hunting.

I'd check out a savage axis ii also.

                              Thanks all.

Looks like I will go with the synthetic stock since a wood one just adds a bit too much to cost. I am putting out a decent amount for a H&K and wanted to keep this as low as possible for an add in, and still be happy with the purchase.

Going to consider the Savage and the Ruger.
