Would You Buy A "Precision" Rifle w/ Unknown Round Count

Hopefully this isn't too stupid a question. Been shooting and hunting awhile but never bothered with anything remotely related to precision shooting or shooting any real extended distances.

Based on some recommendations in another thread, followed by some more research, I started looking for a 700 5r in .308.

Since then I've found a few leads but am uncertain on which direction I want to go regarding purchasing new vs used. My intended use is to take a precision rifle class with it, then start shooting some longer distances out at a buddies place, and keep practicing until I'm comfortable with the gun and feel that upgraded parts and gunsmithing would actually benefit me. From there I'll slowly replace bits and pieces, have the action blueprinted, etc (long term plans, most likely subject to change as I go with this).

From what I've found so far, I can get one shipped to a local shop for ~$975 OTD from buds or Southern Shooters Guns and Gear (who I can't find much info on), or I can get one from grabagun for about $1050 OTD due to sales tax.

I did find one that's used where the guy is asking $950 however he's the second owner and doesn't know the round count from the previous owner as he purchased it from a Cabelas gun library. Major bonus of used is no shipping fees, sales tax, DROS, etc (highly recommend TX).

For a hunting rifle or handgun I wouldn't worry much about a round count. Is there any reason to be concerned when the rifle is intended for a different application? Obviously if I get there and it's a major POS then red flag, but if everything looks good would anyone hesitate due to an unknown round count?

Right now, at $950 I'm thinking the price is a bit too close to what I'd pay for a new one but if we can reach a deal at a lower price I'd be inclined to put the extra $100 or so towards some nicer rings and a base...

    Thanks for the opinions!

P.S. Check back in a week for a thread asking what glass should I get... Just kidding. I promise to fully exhaust the search function before even considering posting that thread!

    Cheers.

At a $100 difference, I'd buy the new one.

      Yep.

Round count is always a hit or miss, you just have to trust your gut/intuition.

Too bad you are in TX. I will be looking to sell mine, once my new build is ready (2-3 months out). I am the second owner and have put about 400-500 rounds on it (all factory ammo, no hot loads).

Here is the original post that lead me to purchase.

Ask him to meet you at a local range where you can shoot some groups, or have him shoot some groups while you watch and decide if it's in good shape or not.
Without physically checking the gun, it's not really possible to grade it to determine what shape it's in.
A printout of the Buds price and a physical inspection go a long way to getting someone to accept a lower price cash offer...

It seems like you score huge on the scope when buying used. Barrels get shot out anyway. Unless it's been beat to death and dragged across the ground, I think I'd be ok with a shot out barrel.

If you plan on doing work to the gun anyway, it could be an amazing deal, if it comes with nice glass.

Does this used gun come with a scope? For 950, it's a piece of crap scope for sure!

Buy a new gun, then a nice piece of glass. You then can do round count. My 5R is one of my most accurate rifles

Barrels are a consumable part of shooting and all you do is factor that into the price your willing to pay.
I wouldn't factor more than $40 for any factory barrel no matter how many R's it has.

Remington recalled the trigger on those ... last year? Try to find out if the used one is affected / has been repaired already.

Or just buy the new one, which is nearly the same price. Unless you're going to get a new trigger anyway and don't care either way.

Trigger is probably the only real upgrade I'll do for awhile. Got some cabelas gift cards that'll cover that.

Unless the guy brings the price down quite a bit I'm just gonna grab the new one I think. I unfortunately won't be able to shoot the rifle prior to purchase as he's not local and I'm only going to be in his area while on a trip.

Plus, and this is my favorite part, I called up the local place to see if they could order one and they said no but feel free to order from wherever I want and have it sent to them as their transfer fee is only $15! I've been here 4 years and love TX more every day!

                    Thanks for the input everyone.

                    Cheers.

If you don't have access to a bore scope buy new. Where in Texas are you located?
