    Looking for a "sniper rifle."

Given the semi auto market has nothing more to offer me I was thinking of buying/building a replica of the sniper rifles I saw in service. I got to handle them a few times and take a few shots, but I don't remember much about them other than they were Remmington 700 pattern rifles, I think in 7.62 NATO, had what seemed to be a shorter and thicker barrel than what I see on the typical hunting rifle.

I was active Army from 01-07 with the 82nd if that helps any of you military buffs recommend parts. Thank you for your help.

I'm more a semi-auto clone rifle type, but if I went with a bolt gun it'd be the M40.

Thanks, the bottom one looks very very similar, I'll look at what goes into an M40, such as stock and optics.

Any specific model of 700 to start this with? There seem to be a few different variations, I've even heard one can't be converted to accept a box magazine.

I'd do that if I was buying for a hunting or competition rifle, but to me this would be about getting as close as I can to the military weapon of the period. I have a few guns like that simply for their military relevance and collectable appeal, like I've got a bone stock 91/30, and the basic GI style 1911, also an M16A4 replica, would love to get my hands on a CMP Garand some day too.

                first choice
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

Man it is a bummer than the 700p comes in 1:9 twist in 223 and 1:12 in 308.

                    Was it the M24?

Introduced in 1962 and beloved by millions of shooters and hunters, Remington's Model 700 bolt-action rifle is the basis for the standard-issue U.S. Army sniping rifle—the M24. It is the ultimate example of a commercial, sporting rifle being modified for the changing nature of modern war.

The commercial analog would be the Remington 700 5R long action in 308 Winchester. I am not sure Remington normally offers this particular configuration, 308 Winchesters are usually built on the short action.

The mil-spec optic is a Leupold Mark 4 M3 scope, but any scope with 10X fixed magnification, 30mm tube body and mil-dot reticle would do.

At least with the 308 you have the 5R model that has an 1:11.25 twist...

                      The 5R 223 model is still a 1:9... that was a bummer.

308 1:12 twist barrels shoot factory 175 grain loads just fine. 24" or longer usually gets the bullet going at 2600 fps. You'd have to be shooting at 50 below freezing at sea level to run out of twist.

Yea I was looking at the 700Ps but then the barrel twist turned me off. Realized I have a bare 700 action so I think I'll go with a Remage barrel.

Long video, but he goes into detail about his build and what you can do to build a similar rifle.
