Remlin 1895 Guide Gun Quality improvement ?

    Hi everyone,

I have been on the market for a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun for a while. It's not easy to find a JM Stamped in good quality (I live in SoCal), so I was thinking about getting a Remlin.
I heard the latest productions have greatly improved from the catastrophic early models dating back to when Remington took over.

Would anyone back this argument ?
What should I look at while inspecting it at the store ?

My observation is that the fit and finish has improved. I'm unsure if the function of newer rifles has reached the level of older JM rifles but i doubt it.

I looked at one of there stainless 45-70 guide guns at sportsmans the other day. It has the XS scout rail + sights and some other different parts. I liked it a lot, the gun was very nice.

I love my 1895 SBL and have had it for a few years. I got a really nice one from the beginning and it's a tack driver. I picked it up as a big game option and protection from angry things with teeth and claws. I sold my Ruger SRH .454 since getting used to the SBL and it's far more comfortable to deal with.

Keep looking around. They go for around $800 and if you inspect them pretty carefully, you should be able to get yourself a nice rifle. I hear the quality has been improving, but for more information, you should read the .45/70 section on the Marlin Owners forum.

        I don't think it's nice,...you laughing.
You see, my mule don't like people laughing.
He gets the crazy idea you're laughing at him.
Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to,
I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Remlin 1895 Guide Gun Quality improvement ?

I bought a JM stamped stainless guide gun two gun shows ago at Costa Mesa with a scope for $650. They are out there you just have to be patient. On my third gg, love them!!! I changed out the stock, it's the one far left.

I was going to pick up a Guide Gun, but found an older JM 336 in .35 Remington and went with that instead.
Much cheaper than a new GG, and no worrying about quality.

Now I just need to install a set of Skinner sights and a medium loop lever.....

            Good luck OP.

I recently picked up a Remlin 1895 Cowboy with 18.5" barrel.

I checked it over at the gun shop and it looked to have been made well. The worst thing I noticed was the action was a little stiff to pop open. The trigger pull is pretty wicked. I ended up putting a Wild West Guns Happy Trigger in - that helped a whole lot.

After getting itto the range to test some of my loads (HSM 405 gr hard cast, unique, varget, and H322) I managed to get 1.125" groups of 5 at 50 yards with iron sights using the H322. I am very happy with that. After shooting some and cycling it a whole lot at home, the action is slicking up nicely. The worst issue is my rear sight is on the highest setting to be on target at 100 yards. Front sight came off center a small amount, but it actually zeroed in the center of the barrel - so that's not a big deal.

Over all -- I am very happy with my Remlin. I purified and cast some lead ingots this afternoon. I will be loading some of my home cast bullets soon to test accuracy.
