    Rem 700

So I have a 700 with a threaded/fluted barrel that came is a hard plastic varmint stock. I purchased a houge stick that came off of a 700 tactical. I installed it last night and while it feels tight and all is well, towards the front of the stick there seems to be a little play between the barrel and stock. It sits deep in the stock and I'm Sure it will fire fine but is this normal? The 2 main screws are secure and very tight to suck it all up together. Is there suppose to be some shims or anything I'm missing? Thanks for the help in advance.

The Houge stock is no better than the plastic stock you removed. You need to upgrade. Check out.. New riflestocks.com

You might consider glass bedding the stock.

Depending on your intended use, you can go crazy with new stock options. As the others have said, the Hogue stocks aren't any better than the factory SPS tupperware.

One cost effective option is to buy a take-off HS Precision stock from a R700 5r or PSS. You can also look at Bell and Carlson for some decent synthetics.

The new Grayboe stocks look awesome, for not much more than B&C or HS Precision.

If you're partial to wood stocks, look at Boyds.

That won't fix his problem of the forend flexing and touching the barrel. Plus your just throwing good money into a bad stock.

Grayboe's are about the best budget friendly stock out right now. The buttstock is solid and not hollow like a Bell & Carlson, so having a cheek riser installed into it makes it easier. They also come inletted already to fit M5 patterned bottom metals, so no extra cost having the stock inleted later on. Lastly the McMillan spacer system will fit them as well so if a longer LOP is needed your golden.

The Bell & Carlson with adjustable cheek riser is your next best bet. Its a little more than the Grayboe, but already has the cheek riser installed.

That is normal for the hogue stock. That's why most most people replace those stocks ASAP.
Stockys brand stock would have been a better choice.

I was looking at those Stockys, how would it be on a hunting gun?

I'd be okay runing one. But they are a little heavy for a hunting gun.

I don't hunt so I can't say. But I did ask my neighbor. He hunts deer. He said he prefers to keep his wood stocks. He said good rifle, good ammo, one shot.
