I've been using exclusively bore tech carbon cleaner and copper cleaner. you can also go with the eliminator. some will tell you not to use a bronze brush. I use one almost everytime. that's the only way to get the carbon and copper out completely.

one tip I would recommend is to go to a match, watch what others do and then invest in a proper f class set up if you want to get competitive. you will learn more in one match than a month on the forums.
I already clean my guns every time after I shoot, but I'm used to rifles with chrome lined bores

Reloading is as important as the rifle. You are way more going to stick with it if you reload. Most new shooters that start reloading when they start shoooting long range stick with it those that dont lose interest. This is a fact

Having been around calguns a while now, I've learned that ammo is almost just as important as the gun itself

Which rifle did you buy ? And model
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

There is a 1000 yard Long Range Match at Camp Pendleton on 12-3,4-16.

            Go to www.smgunclub.org for info.

            You must pre-register by 1200, Wednesday, 11-30-16.

You can go as a 'non-firing observer'.

There are many very good F Class shooters that attend this match.

I have a Rem700 SPS Varmint in .308 that I've switched the stock out to a B&C M40. I mounted a Vortex Viper HS-T to it with a Badger Ordnance base and Badger Ordnance rings.

Thats a pretty good base to start now it's all about trigger time and learning to reload

Yeah, I'm just worried about installing everything correctly. Been watching YouTube videos on it. I followed one video regarding bedding the scope base, and during the part where you measure how much gap needs to be accounted for by bedding, I couldn't even fit one piece of paper between the receiver and the base.

So did you bed the base?
I shot savages for several years and never bedded a base.

I did not. I thought that because the gap between the receiver and the base was so minimal, it wasn't necessary.

Don't worry about bedding the base. It was started many years ago when surplus military actions would have the receivers ground down to remove the markings resulting in many different sizes of the front receiver ring.
You can always do it later if you run into trouble.
And as Bryan posted always use bronze brushes and never use nylon.

So, another question, I noticed that the bottom part of my rings are serialized for match and orientation, but the top part of my rings are not. If I accidentally get the tops mixed up, how much of an issue would that cause?

None...or not enough to worry about.

What does everyone use for slings? I see myself opting more for TR over open. So, I think that means I can only use a bipod and a sling, but no lead sled or rest.
