A Trip To Billy Goat Machine

This last Friday I had Veterans day off and thought I would pick up my new 338 Snipe-Tac barrel from Billy Goat Machine and check-out Calguns Member Skeeter's new shop.
The shop is located in Red way California and took about 3.5 hours to get there from Santa Rosa California. It is located west of Garberville California so if you fish bring your steelhead or salmon pole with you.
A very scenic drive but a long drive.
The shop has a main office a large safe and a very large and very new South Bend lathe next to a Grizzly lathe. The new large lathe can easily handle 2 inch barrels over 3 feet in length.
The owner had my 338 Snipe-Tac Barrel ready to go in a yellow fishnet wrapper and he went over what he did to the barrel muzzlebrake and action with me.
I am known to be very hard on equipment and he pointed out all of my prior problems.
The price was more than fair and the turn around time was weeks not months. And it took me a couple weeks to get a day off to pick it up.
Quality work at a good price from a fellow CalGun member whose rifles always seem to shoot well at our matches.
    Kudos to Skkeeter!!!

Good to know BGM can handle 2" stock!! Thanks for the write up, Lynn.

I love that icon. I am not a hunter, but if I had to shoot an animal, it would definitely be a goat. We had a pet goat as kids. It hated everyone and you had to go at a dead run from the front door to the front gate as it charged you. No one even knew why we had it, it had just always been there terrorizing everyone. It liked climbing on top of the car and gouging it with it's devil-hoofs. Just a really atrocious and unlikable beast. Finally, one day it rammed one of our horses in the hind quarter and got kicked into orbit. We didn't have a goat anymore after that.

This is what the chamber looked like when I took apart Lynn's 338 Snipetac that he brought in. I won't name the smith but the machining is horrendous.

Here's what a chamber should look like. 6.5x47L I just finished up this afternoon.

Bobby.... I grew up very rural with goats as well. According to my mother I survived on goats milk for a week while she was in the hospital unable to feed me hence my logo.
I have fond memories of getting knocked on my *** if I wasn't paying attention when I walked home from school.

Also for anyone wondering, my new South Bend lathe with a 2" spindle bore won't be up and running for another month. My electrician broke his back during deer season! He's fine, and is almost ready to go back to work.

The more "big name" rifles you take apart, the more you will see that.
It seems that most rifle builders did NOT start out as machinists.

I was all excited about getting my 50BMG named BigRed chambered into an improved version for extra velocity.
I have to find out if it needs to go to a assault weapons gunsmith as I registered it when that whole debacle took place years ago.

Sorry I didn't take any pictures he has some very nice rifles and a nice chassis for sale if you have a very large BAT action.
I am sending him a 1.750X32 Lilja for a 338 Lapua Improved heavygun. I have a hunch he is going to get busy sooner than later.

He also had some crazy light semi builds he was working on.
I may have to go to the dark side before its too late.

Regular gunsmiths, or even just a machine shop can work on an AW while you wait for it.
If you want to LEAVE the gun there, then the shop needs to have an AW permit to be able to keep it overnight.

It all sounds good to me, and the pic of that chamber job is worth a thousand words.

I'm just waiting on my 510 Europa and 375 CT GO gauges, then I'm ready for chambering on the Big BAT EX, with a 2"x36" Bartlien for the 510, and a 1.75x36 Kreiger for the 375CT.

I've got a McMilian Super BR 50 on order, but we're still a few months away apparently. Maybe BGM's chassis can do the trick?

Randall thanks for the heads up. It looks like I am buying a improved 50 BMG reamer and making the 3.5 hour trip again. I am pushing a 800 grain Lapua borerider at 2915 fps with the standard chamber.

                    JoeFrank64
I think the chassis is a XLR for a 12 inch BAT action.
I will try and post a picture.

I've heard that the XLR BMG chassis are a bit flexi...have you heard that Lynn??

Yes I have heard that from Skkeeter himself. He had to do a lot of work on that chassis to stiffen it up. A very impressive item and his price is very good as well.

Maybe I'll have to go to BGM for my 700 build.

                            That rollmark is great.
