Thinking about replacing my 1940 Winchester 70 30/06 with a new lightweight composite stock rifle. I love the 70 and know I will keep it forever since it was passed down to me by my grandfather. It has taken many animals in its day. I am just tired of lugging all the weight around the Sierras. I also want to keep it in relatively nice shape. So I saw this Savage stainless rifle as an option. In 6.5 creedmore it weighs 5.65 lbs. I have a Ziess 3x9 scope to put on it already. Just looking for feedback from anyone who has any experience with this model. I am too poor to afford a kimber or other $2000 rifle. This Savage seems to be around $650 in most stores.

Savage 16/116 lightweight hunter thoughts?

For just a little more money and about 1 pound take a look at the 16/116 Weather Warrior, this one comes with the accustock.Comment

I have an older 110, light it is not nor is pretty but like every Savage I have seen it sure does shoot. Point being Savage is a old choice but there are a lot of options in this space.Comment

I'm looking to keep just the rifle weight under 6 lbs. The weather warrior is a bit too heavy for what I am looking for. I am not looking to shoot more than twice at worst. Not worried about a barrel heating up. The stock will get beat up, so composite is preferred/ok. Just looking for a affordable shooter. A custom rifle is too expensive. I will spend hundreds of hours carrying it and seconds shooting. If there are any other rifles I should be looking for, I am all ears. I have heard Savage are reasonably good shooters for the money.Comment

Mossberg, Ruger, Howa and Savage all have offers in this space. I like the Ruger American and the Savage Axis. I have always liked Howa but the are a little more cost and a little heavier but I feel you get a little more.Comment

And the Ruger American comes in right at 6 lb in the compact or 6.2 in the standard if you wanted to stay with 30-06Comment

I love that new rifle! I said GET IT!
I have that on my want list as my choice hunting rifle.
Grabagun has it for $550.
I'm a fan of the weather warrior, too...but the lightweight hunter has a 20",
I love the walnut lwt hunter, but it's a couple hundred more.
These lightweights have the spiral fluted bplts,
But what's really cool are the cuts in the receiver that have that custom look vs a typical receiver in that price range.
And something i suspect, but can't completely confirm..I think it's a slightly thinner barrel contour, too.Comment

I have the model 11 lightweight hunter in 7mm-08. Its by far my favorite bolt gun I own, it just handles and points like a dream. You will not be disappointed in the model 16, I'm sure. I will warn you though, it gets hard to use an 8lb. gun after you've shot one of these. Your '06 will very likely be retired if you get the Savage.

I've handled the 11 Lightweight hunter many times and I really think it would be a killer in 6.5 or 7mm, that stainless/synthetic combo would be great for no fuss factor.

Thanks for the help. I went ahead and purchased the rifle from grabagun.com. I appreciate the link and forum help. Spent 20+ hours researching 6.5 vs other calibers looking forward to getting this lightweight setup dialed in. Hoping 2017 puts as much meat in the freezer as this years harvest.Comment
