Help for next .223 purchase. Deciding between conversion (R700) or new rifle(Savage).

I got into LR shooting maybe 4 years ago and dove in deep with a Remington 700 AAC-SD in .308. I quickly updated the parts I did not like and ended up with a stock action and barrel but added a Timney Trigger, an AICS 1.5 and Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50. I haven't shot that rifle in years due to where I was living and now I do have access to a 1000 yard range but it is only open on Tuesdays from 9am to 5pm. Any other day it goes out to 200 yards.


Anyway due to ammo consolidation and this shorter range I want to focus on .223. I also have no problem parting out my current build and using the AICS, Vortex scope and Timney trigger on a new build and putting my .308 barreled action away for a while.


Unfortunately I am stuck on my decision.


Option 1 is to buy a Savage 12 FCV. The trigger is nice, but not as nice as the Timney, I like the 1:9 twist rate but would prefer something 1:8 or 1:7. And the rifle is known for this quality action and barrel. I do think the stock is kind of flimsy though, atleast that was my impression from my friends 10FCP-SR.


Option 2 is to buy another Remington 700 or a barreled action and place it in the AICS. I got lucky with mine Remington AAC-SD but with all the horror stories I'm not 100% convinced I won't get a problem free Remington 700 a second time around and worried the accuracy won't be as good as the Savage 12. I also am not sure about the twist rate of 1:12 for the Remington rifles. It looks like I can get a tactical model with a 20" barrel for a 1:9 rate but I would prefer a slightly longer barrel.


At the end of the day I would like to save money where I can but overall I want a solid platform that will last a long time.

I bought one of these last year. just added a DBM and had the barrel threaded for a muzzle brake, added a Timney trigger. great shooter.

Personally I would re-barrel it to a .223 and use a new PTG bolt for that, but I'd have the bolt fit to the action you have rather than reaming out the raceway. That way ideally you could swap back to the old bolt and barrel if you felt like it.

I guess I should clear up what I meant by "convert", I meant parting out what I have on my .308 and putting it on a .223 So using the timney, aics, scope, rings, and bipod and leaving the barreled .308 action in the safe.

I also want to pick up a factory rifle and don't want to wait for months of lead time.

One day I wouldn't mind something more custom but my skills aren't there yet.
