Rem 700 -- bolt stop pin is bent.

So how soft is the metal on the "bolt stop pin" on a Remington 700?

Tonight I was swapping in a new trigger. The process is tap out the bolt stop pin (the rearward one of the two that hold in the trigger assembly) just far enough so the bolt stop and spring don't come out. Well my pin fell out, along with bolt stop and spring. when I picked up the pin, it was visibly bent. WTH?

So I know I did not bend it tapping it out, I used small taps with a rubber mallet on the punch. There did seem to be a good bit of friction, but it only required taps.

While I was working on the action, I rested the action on a Caldwell shooting bag, while the pin was partly out. I suppose that could have bent the pin, but the metal would have to be really soft. It wasn't even sitting on a real sandbag.

last possibility is that it was bent at the factory, but can't believe that would happen.

Anyone else ever bent one of these?

So you are talking the rear pin? I just removed my 700 trigger tonight. I removed the sping and bolt stop. From what I remember when I went to the armorer class years ago you hit the pin out from the left side. My pin wasn't bent but it was from an old adl model. You can tap the front pin and leave it partially hanging in. I don't see how the rear pin could be bent and still fit.

Yes, the rear one (of two that hold trigger assembly to the receiver) is called the bolt stop pin on the Remington parts diagram. I was trying to do just what you said, and move it only far enough to remove trigger, without the bolt stop and spring coming out. but once I got it that far, then it was fairly loose, and came out all the way.

Well, my pin was straight that I took out tonight. The rear should have a point on one end. I don't know how you could remove the trigger without taking out the spring as it wraps around it. They aren't too bad putting back. Is the pin plastic? Strange it's bent. You can buy a replacement on brownells. It may straighten out or still fit. I don't see how you could have possibly bent it.

Its not plastic. It is definitely a ferrous metal (checked with magnet).

Not going to try to straighten or reuse it. New ones ordered from Brownells. No range time this weekend. : ((

It most likely got bent when you were removing it.
If it was bent while in the gun it would have been a ***** to push out.
I go to the local salvage yard and buy a 20 foot length of 1/8 stainless and cut it into trigger pins with a cut off wheel. One piece sells for $8 and makes a mayonaise jar of pins.
I have never used drill rod but I heard people use it.
