Magpul hunter 700

I just jailed a Remington 700 5R. Thinking of replacing the stock with the Magpul one.

Has anyone used one or have any experience with it?

I played with one at Cabelas, the fore end flexed to much for my liking. It didn't touch the barrel, but still.

IMO, you just got a 5R, the Magpul stock is not worthy of it. I think Magpul made a great product, (I bought their DBM and fit it to my rifle) its not what I would put on a $1,000 rifle. The stock you have on the 5R is just as good as the Magpul if not slightly better.

If you still want to upgrade, you can sell the 5R stock for about $200 and put that towards a nicer stock.

Do you like chassis style stocks? The feel and ergonomics of an AR?

You can pick one of those up for about $600. Then you don't have to bed it, or buy a bottom metal and have it inletted to take mags. Remember you also have your 5R stock to sell and offset some cost.

Also, some of the bigger stock makers like Manners and McMillan have a few stocks that are kind of "off the shelf" where you don't pay as much and don't wait as long as when ordering a completely custom stock. You can't pick and choose all the options, but if you can find one at least very close to what you want/like, you can get a top of the line stock at a slight discount.

That would be a downgrade.
The stock that comes out of the box on the 5R is technically superior to the Magpul stock.
The Magpul stock just looks cooler.

I guess I am in the minority, but I really like the Magpul stock.

I had some issues with the Manners stock I had on my Stiller/Brux 6.5 Creed. I skim bedded it into the Magpul stock and it shoots with the same sub 0.5 MOA accuracy, but is more ergonomic IMO. I really love the adjustablility, the grip profile, flat fore end, and comb design.

At first, the Magpul stock looks like it might be heavy, but it is actually lighter than many of my hunting stocks, and is much lighter than a precision stock.

I wasn't sure that I was going to like the plastic magwell for detachable mags, but I ended up liking that too.

I think Magpul did a great job and the stock is priced well under its value for what you get. It isn't as cool as my $1800 JAE-700 stock, but it makes a hell of a good long range hunting stock for just over $200.

You could ask Doan Trevor to build you a stock, then it won't be a grand, it'll be two.

Kumho Ecsta V720's are sick. They are the factory rubber on the Dodge Viper ACR.



Back on topic, the Magpul Hunter stock:

PROS:

• Is cheap. $220 street price. And Brownells sells a combo for $370.00: the stock, the DBM with (1) 5-round magazine, and (2) 10-round magazines Brownells - Magpul Hunter 700 SA Combo
• Has cool features and looks cool
• It works, I like it

CONS:

• Feels cheap/plastic-y, it's no McMillian or Manners. But if you feel okay about PMAGs, then you will feel okay about the Hunter stock.
• The forend does flex some under vertical load, but still maintains free float.
• Timney straight triggers (Model 517, 520CE-ST etc.) do not fit in the Magpul DBM trigger guard. You will have to grind down the trigger tip at an angle to make it work.

Here's a comparison, same range session, same 100 yard target (1/2" square grid), same shooter (me).

This is a 5-shot group from a standard Remington 700 SPS Varmint in 308 in a Magpul Hunter stock, with a Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 scope. A $950 rifle (plus $850 scope)


This is a 5-shot group from a Krieger barreled Remington 700 in 6.5x47 Lapua in a Eliseo RTS chassis with a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 scope. A $2300 rifle (plus $950 scope)


Don't buy the Magpul stock for $220 expecting that you're getting $500+ worth of stock. It is $220 worth of build quality, with the adjustability, modularity, and features included from higher end stocks. So it does fill a niche in the aftermarket stock spectrum.
