That's funny, cause you dont hear about bolt action much less 410 very much.

My grandmothers Steven's .410 bolt action controls varmints in our blueberry patch... Works very well. Grandma got it back in the 1930's.

The thing is, lever action rifles just aren't seen as being as accurate for long range hunting out here. Most of that is myth, but when people moved to smokeless rifles out here in the west, they tended to go with bolt action rifles. Most of our shots were at longer ranges that you find for typical hunting back east or down south. So many of the hunters out here gravitated towards the more powerful cartridges. Most of which were only to be found in bolt actions. That being said, the Savage 99 in .300 Savage was the quintessential deer rifle here in America for about 50 years. The .308 model is more than enough gun for anything you are likely to run into. Personally, until I moved to the 6.8 SPC II, I used a .300 Savage Model 99 for nearly all of my hunting. There is nothing wrong with lever guns.

Took my 1st, 2nd ........ 30 (approx.) with my Grandfathers 99E in 308. It was great for South Texas deer and hog hunting. I've taken animals out to 200 yards with it and as best that I recall the most any of them ran was maybe 50 yards. Most dropped in their tracks.


While I haven't taken it hunting in years, I still take it to the range at times and it still puts the rounds in the 9 & 10 ring at 100 yds.

Most deer in Cali can easily be had with a 300 Savage, or .308 version of the same lever action rifle. The rifle shines in most of our mountain hunting scenarios, fleeting shots in brush of less than 150 yards. Might be a bit tough in true western hunts like in Wyoming/Montana etc.... where the shots are longer and more open. Love the 300 Savage cartridge and especially lever actions. Next rifle for me will be a Savage Model 99, in either caliber. Have vast quantities of both, especially since my son bought a Rem 722 in 300 Savage. That necessitated buying the die set for reloading that caliber.
