Spoken like a young and inexperienced shooter.
Cool has nothing to do with it. I didn't even know they were supposedly "cool."
Do you think competitors do anything just to be cool? They use whatever works to win. Period.
Do you think older shooters or shooters with chronic injuries do anything just to be cool? They use whatever works to lessen recoil. Period.
Do hunters alone in the field care if they look cool? They use whatever works to keep their eyes on the target in hopes they don't lose sight of their prey and/or need a dreaded follow-up shot. Period.
There are very good reasons to run a brake/comp. Learn why and perhaps you'll become a better shooter yourself."Show me a young conservative and I'll show you a man without a heart. Show me an old liberal and I'll show you a man without a brain." - Sir Winston Churchill

The big downside to a brake on a hunting rifle is noise. Lots of people hunt without ear protection, and in that case a brake can lead to significantly more hearing damage.Spoken like a young and inexperienced shooter.

Truth be told, I own both the APA lilbastard and the Ross Shuler brakes. No discernible difference except one wasn't as polished/finished as the other but cost less than half.
I'd go Ross Schuler.Comment

If you're interested in seeing your bullet splash at long range then you should use a brake. Even with the 6.5mm it's difficult without one.

I don't have a dog in this fight, my experience at long range is new but shooting 6.5 I could see the splash at 700 yards, around .9 seconds in flight I think it was, and that was enough for the recoil pulse to be over and at 24X I was still able to observe the hit much to my surprise.
I was used to .308 at closer ranges and that was often hard to observe much at all.

A brake actually helps to see bullet splash at SHORTER RANGES, like 100-400yds.
Longer ranges give the gun more TIME to come out of recoil and if your position behind the gun is good, the gun will end up back on target before the bullet impacts.
At shorter ranges, the gun is still in recoil when the bullet hits the target or dirt.Randall Rausch

Ok. That makes sense. I've only been shooting at long range for less than a year now. I like my brake and would recommend one to others.

I am currently having a JP Tactical installed on my Savage 7RM. Does anyone have experience with them? There are so many to choose from, I just went with EA Brown's recommendation. $200 installed
This gun is capable of < .5 MOA groups but I can't consistently pull those off because of recoil and the need to wrap myself around it like a python and maintain a stiff grip, or else getting scope bit and seeing 1+ MOA groups.
(best loads - 140 TSX/TTSX 3200fps, 120 TTSX @3500, down to .25 MOA with 5 shot groups)
I'm hoping this brake, which is supposed to reduce recoil by at least 50% will allow me to have a more relaxed shooting interface to the gun. I can shoot my 270 all day without a brake.Comment

Yes, that is the big downside, hunting. I'm wondering how much you can hear with those high tech in-ear protectors that use phase cancellation or whatever to mute the boom of a gun. At the range, I usually double up and use in ear AND over ear protection. Still, I hear ringing all the time. 50 years ago we didn't use any ear protection.Comment

LOL, now with a brake, my 7RM will actually be louder at the range than the many braked 223 ARs that show up! Gosh those things are obnoxious. Can't wait to make the AR blammers want to get distance between me and them.
Well as my pappie used to say, "if you can't beat 'em, get what they have but bigger and beat 'em".Comment
