    Hunting with a lever gun

Six more days until my Winchester 1873 (.38/.357) is in my hands. Can someone recommend lead free ammo in .357? I think I would like to hunt hogs with it this fall.
    Thanks in advance.

Isn't that kind of a lite weight cartridge for hogs? I might try a 44mag, but 357?

Only got one hog, but it was with 300 Savage.

The Underwood penetrator rounds are copper solids. don't know if they need to be on some kind of approved list but that's what I got for ya off the top of my head.
Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

I am also in the camp of .357 being a bit light for pigs.

Underwood penetrator's don't expand and, therefore, aren't CA legal to hunt with.

Look at Buffalo Bore. They are loaded with Barnes bullets which are CA approved.

Longer barrels will kick up the speed on a .357, .44 etc. The problem is that not all of the bullets themselves are designed to perform or handle those kinds of velocities. A hollow point bullet from a handgun, for example, typically has enough time to properly expand on a soft target. Crank up the velocity too high an a similar bullet might not expand or just disintegrate all together.

                          The summary is:
The bullet must be an expanding bullet.
If you are on a state wildlife area or ecological reserve it must be a non-lead expanding bullet.
If you are in the condor area it must be a non-lead expanding bullet that is on the approved list.

It is my unpracticed opinion that .357, especially in a rifle, loaded with expanding non-lead bullets is likely a poor choice for pig hunting. I would be worried that the bullet would impact at velocities greater than it is designed for, expanding very rapidly and slowing down very quickly thereby limiting penetration. That being said, I don't think that would be an issue for small/young pigs.

                          (c) Except for the provisions of the following subsections (d) through (j), big game may only be taken by rifles using centerfire cartridges with softnose or expanding projectiles; bow and arrow (see Section 354 of these regulations for archery equipment regulations); or wheellock, matchlock, flintlock or percussion type, including "in-line" muzzleloading rifles using black powder or equivalent black powder substitute, including pellets, with a single projectile loaded from the muzzle and at least .40 caliber in designation
                          (d) Shotguns capable of holding not more than three shells firing single slugs may be used for the taking of deer, bear and wild pigs. In areas where the discharge of rifles or shotguns with slugs is prohibited by county ordinance, shotguns capable of holding not more than three shells firing size 0 or 00 buckshot may be used for the taking of deer only.
                          (e) Pistols and revolvers using centerfire cartridges with softnose or expanding projectiles may be used to take deer, bear, and wild pigs.
                          (f) Pistols and revolvers with minimum barrel lengths of 4 inches, using centerfire cartridges with softnose or expanding projectiles may be used to take elk and bighorn sheep.
