Savage Axis Build with MDT chassis

Couldn't turn down a great deal on a Savage Axis II XP .308, so I figured it would be a good budget build for a decent range toy.

Probably went to far for what this rifle really is...

Luth-AR MBA-3 Stock
MOE+ Grip
UTG Recon 360 Bipod
Glades Armory Bolt Handle

Still has the Weaver Kaspa it came with, debating on optics at the moment. Also debating on putting in a 24" Varmint contour barrel.

Some people will say I wasted money on a cheap rifle, but hey, I have fun with this stuff. At least it looks cool.

I have to agree. Before you just buy a barrel, read up more on twist rates and buy a heavy barrel. ( Target ) Varmint barrels usually have slower twist rates.

It's hard to swallow that the barrel will be as much, if not more than the original rifle, especially after the chassis. But if I can get an E.R. Shaw barrel, I'll probably bite that bullet.

It's between a 1:10 24" or a 1:12 26" barrel. I'd love to do a bull barrel or a heavier contour, but those would run well over $400 for this application, vice 200-250 for the aforementioned options.

It's going to be an extremely rare opportunity for me to be able to shoot beyond 200yds, but not out of the question. I'd like to have a fair group at 5-600 yards, and getting out to 1k would be great considering the cost of this build, but not expected.

Any thoughts on the length/twist?

If it were me I'd probably get a Criterion stainless varmint contour 26" with 1-10 or 1-11 twist.

I say because you have already jumped into to this project with both feet, get a decent bull barrel and a decent scope.

Criterion and McGowen make good prefit barrels you can install yourself. Take this opportunity to upgrade to a 6.5 Creedmore. Get a solid base/rings and a fixed power SWFA scope for a winning combo.

Looks like a Savage 10 stealth

Stealth is supposed to be
blue printed, threaded barrel and fluted barrel
Shoot .5 moa at 100 out of the box,

Chuck the mdt mag is useless
Get magpul ai mag, $30 for 5 round mag
