surplus bolt action good for Home Defense?

if you had to pick any type of old surplus rifle as a Home Defense rifle for out on the ranch / rural area / suburbs

which one would you choose? I would probably pick some type of carbine length bolt action, like maybe a Spanish FR8 mauser in .308

    or a Russian M44 in 7.62x54R

if you trained with a bolt action , a person could get pretty fast with one

I'm sure the next thread will be "best pocket knife for home defense" at this rate.

But for fun, a British Enfield.

Enfields, 98 Mausers, 03 Springfields, SKS, all kinds of rifles out there. Ammo
availability matters. 7.62X39 for the SKS is very plentiful, 303 Brit for the
enfield is out there, but not always recent mfg.

        Trench broom.

Honestly, while a bolt-action battle rifle beats a sharp stick all to heck, I'd rather try to work with a lever action if you're accepting that much of a handicap.

Would spaghetti or fettuccini be the best wet noodle for home defense?!?

          Just for fun.

Ishapore 2A1 with bayonet, Mosin with bayonet or 03 Springfield with bayonet.

For in the home.... Shotgun... $250 used....

                Trying to wake up
                Blink the sleep away
                Find the Mauser
Figure out the safety - what position is that thing in... Bolt unlocked- bolt locked- fire???

                But back to the question

Almost any WWII or later mil surplus can be used for home defense...
                Many WWI will work too

It depends on how much you will dry practice and shoot to make the controls reflexive... When approaching a red light, do you think about what pedal to press, where it is located or how hard to press... It is reflexive

Loading and working the action/ safety should also be reflexive

With .308 and greater... Volume of fire and or speed of fire is not as critical...

They will drop a 1,200 pound elk if you have correct shot placement...
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
                (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

Too bad the 1930's "Auto Burglar" was outlawed; short, double barreled shotgun. Good for your auto and to respond to that 3AM noise!

Living in the City im more scared of shooting my neighbor next door(or next block IE X54R) then shooting the intruder with my Mosin. I can see it being useful at a distance or with a smaller caliber bolt-action but most intruders will probably be carrying a semi automatic of some kind.

I had many WW2 surplus rifles, i kept one Mosin M 44 carbine because it is powerful, reliable and i have over 1,400 rounds put away. I bought the ammo when it was .19c a round.

LA riots Korean store owners on roof tops

an old surplus rifle would come in handy for roof top security like during the LA Riots
