How to ship a longggg rifle?

Hi,

I sold a rifle with a 30" barrel via gunbroker and need to ship it across country to the buyers FFL.

My question is about packaging. This thing is huge! And I need a packaging that is about 50 X 8 X 4 inches....

My hope was to use a cardboard tube from carpets but these are only 6" diameter

I have searched online and cant' seem to find tubes or boxes that don't cost a small fortune (shipping is the problem).

Looking for a source in Ventura County.


The other solution I can think of is to buy a roll of curated cardboard and roll the rifle in manny layers. But I wander if this will be strong enough to survive UPS..

Contact your LGS FFL. Guaranteed they have tons of boxes lying around in the back from guns they put in the front of the store.

If it is a pricier rifle, you may want to invest in ordering that 51" plano case from amazon, $44 and will come in a cardboard box as well. More money invested, but may end up saving you the headache. Ive also broken down rifles (depending on what it is) and wrapped them in shop towels and put them in smaller cheapo plano cases.

Its funny, no one likes paying big money for shipping until you need to ship something yourself and have to go get the supplies.

Find a big box from a refrigerator, shed, etc. and make your own box. It's really not that hard. If you want to, you can remove the action from the stock and ship them in a shorter box.

I second the advice about asking gun shops. Or is it possible to remove the action from the stock, that would reduce the length some

I don't know what OAL you're dealing with, but I've "telescoped" two shorter rifle boxes together to make length.

ULine has boxes that will fit your rifle, the problem is that they only sell in lots of 25 or more: http://www.uline.com/BL_410/Tall-Boxes

Great way to go. I dealt with a fedex insurance issue on a 700 Krieger build. box looked like it went through a meat grinder. Took over a month and multiple emails with PP presentations showing photos and facts but they paid up. It was even in a cardboard gun box doubled up with a plano shipping cardboax box.
Always keep the boxes long gun cases come in. Here endeth the lesson.

Flambeau, Plano, Condition 1, etc make most of their gun cases, long and pistol, here in the states. Shipping a lot of air in cases so its more efficient to keep them here.

Probably a drop shipper that need to see if they can first acquire the case, then forward it to the consumer.

You might be able to find a golf club box at a postal annex type place too. You will likely have to figure out your own pacing though.
