Winchester Model 70 Question

So, a friend was selling a Winchester Model 70 in .30-06 at a very decent price. I didn't have a good bolt gun other than a Mosin, so I bought it sight unseen, figuring I couldn't go wrong for the price. The wood and finish are in pretty good shape, and the serial number is 1515XX. From what I could find on the net, it looks like a 1950 model.

Can anyone confirm this for me? Any guesses on approximate value? I would list it as fair to good condition. I will try to post pictures later.

I love the model 70 so I'm biased. I've seen them go for $650-1200. Most folks seem to prefer the control feed but I've never owned one of those. No problems with my push feed.

The trigger is the only thing I would change on mine. It's not been fired a lot and is noticeably stiffer than some of my other rifles.

If it's made in 1950 is the desirable pre-64.

For sure. $200 is a steal for a pre-64 in decent condition. Heck, $200 is a steal for a post-64.

He's talking about a model 70 not a model 94

Does it matter? My impression has always been anything pre-64 from Winchester is more desirable. I'm not a lever gun guy, so the model 70 seems like the better deal either way.

These are the dates from the Winchester ledgers curated by the Cody Firearms Museum at the Buffalo Bill Center For The West (i.e. the only place to get dates, even the dates on WInchester's site (Olin) are wrong).

The (just released) Red Book of Winchester Values places a 1943-1963 Standard Grade 24" 30-06 at Fair (60%) condition at $540.

Without seeing pics, it looks like you got a steal.

Definitely more desirable, not necessarily better made.

My Model 70 was my first rifle, chambered in .30-06, I think I have taken more game with that gun than all my other guns combined, save maybe my first shotgun.
