Need advice/suggestions for rifle

I'd like to get on the Mosin-Nagant bandwagon but haven't a clue which years (and manufacturers) to avoid.

I'm not looking for a pristine firearm. No fantasies of spending 10 bucks thinking I just picked up a $2,000 gem. Just suggestions on either which years/models to avoid or better yet, which years/models are preferred and in which caliber (I understand they came in three calibers). My objective is to take it to the range and shoot, shoot then shoot some more.
