    Am I getting ripped off?

Hello Calgunners I'm a newbie when it comes to Bolt action rifles so need your advice.

I am looking to buy a 308 rifle. Basically in case I ever want to go hunting or if there is ever a SHTF situation. I already have pistols and a 556.

I found someone selling a 308 Kimber 8400 Patrol with a Harris Bi Pod and Leupold VX3 4.5X14-40 scope for $2000.00. He said he would go down to $1800.00.

So my question is if I am looking for a bolt action rifle that I will keep forever and possibly pass on to my kid is this the sort of rifle that makes sense for me? Is this over priced or can I get more for money buy buying a Remington 700 snd maybe another scope?

Again, I'm looking for something that will cover me should SHTF or if I wanted to get out and hunt.

    Any advice is much appreciated.

    Thanks.

Well, look up the new prices of the scope, mount, rings, bi pod & rifle and determine if the sellers used package price is fair.......

As for a forever rifle, that's your call.

Unless you have a good reason for buying a used 8400 patrol, you should do some research before dishing out 1800 bucks. Heres a start:

The rifle alone likely sold for about $1800 when new. So depending I the condition of the rifle it's not a bad deal. It's not a spectacular dealer either though. As far as a hand me down, it's a good choice.

Forever rifle is something classy you pass down to your kids.
Shtf rifle is a different animal. You don't hunt, do you plan on target shooting or just a safe queen?
Get a stainless ruger American, howa stainless to be discontinued so look for sale or a TC venture. Some talley or DNZ rings, limb saver, vx 2 with CDS and your fine and still under a 1000. more like 800

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

                Start with this:
The mil-spec 5R rifles are extremely popular, let us see why…

Personally I prefer to start with a good base model bolt action and customize it to my likes and preferences. I personally went with a Remington 700, I did a lot of research on the weapon and found it would suit my needs. It was purchased second hand so it came with a scope but that was it. I changed out the trigger added the bipod I wanted and will continue from there. Its a very popular weapon so its easy to find parts for as well.

As far as for if the SHTF and you want a 308 you can take hunting get an AR-10. You can take it hunting, you just have to limit your rounds, and it will be semi auto for the SHTF scenario. And seeing how they are probably going to be illegal here at the beginning of the new year you might not be able to get your hands on one.

Research a lot and Good luck.

All excellent suggestions. I am going to look at a couple other rifles before I "pull the trigger" on the Kimber. Thanks again for the advice.

As was mentioned...add up the new prices and see what the discount is.

To me, the question is whether or not you want to spend your money on a Kimber as Kimber doesn't really have a reputation for greatness in bolt rifles. With Kimber, I'd stick to their 1911 handguns. You may as well get something really nice--something that you want. Bolt rifles last forever--they just need periodic rebarreling. And, with rifles, the most important thing for accuracy is the barrel.

Now, if you have already chosen a Kimber as your preference in make and model, then go for it.

Best advice I received (and took) was here on CG for my first bolt action.

Start with something respected, inexpensive and simple. IMO, you shouldn't spend more than $700 for a basic rifle with a composite wood stock (you could save $50 and go synthetic), mounts, rings and a 3-9x40 scope. Get to know the rifle, shoot it and it will help you determine what may be lacking in this rifle that you'd want in your next (do you want a longer barrel, different caliber, better scope, different trigger, different stock, etc).

Then move on to your next rifle (keep or sell the 1st rifle). Rinse and repeat until you find the right combination of stock, barrel, caliber, trigger, scope, etc. for its intended use.
                            .
Facts are to liberals as kryptonite is to Superman.
                            ...

Feed a man a fish, he eats for a day (Democrat).
Teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime (Republican).

                              $1500 MSRP
More compact than a dedicated precision rifle but still harnessing the ballistics of the .308 Win., the Kimber Model 8400 Patrol strikes a strategic balance between mobility and long-range capability.

                              Scope on Amazon $858

                              $80 - $100 for the bipod.
About $2200 - $2400 if you were to buy it outright since you might find the rifle a little cheaper.
