Is this a good choice for a precision bolt action?

Savage 12 (http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/12VLPDBM). It has most of what I'm looking for: Detachable mag, comes in 243 or 308, wood stock, accutrigger (or similar) and a 26" barrel (although I'm OK with a 24" barrel). Goal is to hit steel as far as 800 yards. I can't find another rifle that has the same/similar features I like that would be accurate out of the box....but I'm open to suggestions.

You will get bored with it too easily. Squeeze the trigger, hit the target, ho-hum.

I have the same gun in 22-250. Took a yote last year at 436yds. It's almost not fair. Crazy accurate!

Great choice, especially for a factory rifle. Dont let the haters sell you on something else if you like the Savage.

Good rifle. Just like mongoose said don't let the savage haters deter you. You can hit 800 yards with the 24" barrel no problem. Hardly a difference between 24" and 26". Ruger precision rifle is also another good accurate rifle out of the box.

If you are looking at Savage, check out a 12 LRP as well....

Do note that the 243 has a 1:9.25" twist. This will be a bit slow to shoot the very popular 105gr target bullets. You'll probably need to limit the bullet weight to about 90gr.

Great choice. Will easily reach out to 1000+ with 175's or 155's with a 308.
