I can't help with your scope mounting woes, just verifying they have little/no value. I picked up one of these with a cracked stock for $45! bought a new stock from marlin (but its a plastic replacement) for $29!

Only have seen them with side mounts. Any holes drilled into the left side of receiver? Not quite sure what that top hold was for, but my guess is that someone has a custom or home made mount on there. Probable bent steel plate to hug the receiver.
