Ruger No. 1 Accuracy

I hear people saying that the Ruger No. 1 rifles just aren't accurate. I've been playing with my old red pad 270 Winchester. Most people use the heavier 150 grain bullets in these guns but I couldn't get them to shoot under 1.5" at 100 yards. I decided to try the 130 grain TSX bullets and got them to consistently shoot three shots into an inch but as most of you know, I've never satisfied with that level of accuracy so just for fun, I decided to try the 110 grain Barnes TTSX and was amazed at the results.

These are the first loads that I tried with this bullet. Except for one shot that I pulled with 51 grains of Reloader 15, this gun shot everything under an inch and two loads under half an inch. I shoot three shot groups with sporter weight hunting guns because that's all I'll ever need to shoot at one time.

I think that I'm going to load up the rest of the box of bullets with 51.5 grains of Reloader 15 and take it hunting for antelope in Wyoming this September.

My old red-pad .45-70 is 1.5 MOA with Hornady 325gr factory ammo... don't see why it couldn't do better with judicious hand-loads.

There may be some truth to groups opening quickly under sustained fire, but that's not a problem for me either.

Never had a problem getting my No.1-B[30-06], to shoot an 1" group, four shots mind you. Never really fiddled with anything other than load development. Good optics always help. Glad I got my No.1 when I did. It's a shooter, and was under $600.00! Good luck with that nowadays.

I like my No1 in 22-250 well enough. It's been a trusty squirrel getter for years.

If all those shots were taken with the same sight setting, I'd say that is normal for a number 1. The forearm hanger is the usual suspect.

Probably nothing wrong - each string was shot with different load.

Here's my no1-V .223 red pad at 100 yards. Just some ammo that was lying around.

I moved the scope 3 clicks right and 4 up after the first group so I wouldn't hit the sighting picture. Then I came down 2 clicks before the last group trying to get it to sit right on the point of the diamond.

My friend had an older very very accurate No.1 in 270. It was stolen several years back.

My no.1 in 30-06 was the least accurate rifle I ever shot and all my research lead me to believe that all no.1's were inaccurate. I tried everything to get good accuracy and after 10+ years I just gave up. It was beautiful looking though.

So, I'm wondering if you have my friends stolen rifle?...

LOL, I only bought it about 3 years ago and it cleared the DROS check so if it was stolen, your friend forgot to report it.

A red pad 270 just sold in the SF east bay area for $675.

He reported it. What are the odds of there being two accurate no.1's????

He bought another one it but last I heard is that it's not even close to being as accurate. Inthink he even had the barrel replaced to try to improve it.

If you happen upon an accurate Ruger no.1 then it's a lucky one!
