    Stainless vs Blued

Which do you prefer and why?

In general? For a hunting rifle? If you could custom build for any purpose you wish?

Lend me your thoughts, but be sure to include the WHY, even if its just because you think it looks better.

    Thanks!

Don't put too much worry or effort into it. Neither one is rust proof and with care and maintenance a blued rifle will last as long as a stainless one. Pick what you like and know that with modern coatings both can be even more resistant than the steel alone.

Are you referring to the finish or metal type?
Generally only chrome moly barrels are blued.

Personally, I like blued. That doesn't mean I don't have any stainless (if it weren't of course for that tragic CG boating accident) but blue is my preference.

I prefer stainless guns with laminate or synthetic stocks in wet weather and I use stainless barrels in my match guns but I prefer the look of blue steel and walnut.

              Stainless vs Blued

Blued. When it wears away parkerizing it is great. The parkerizing holds oil really well.

When I rebarreled several rifles I used SS barrels mostly because I was told they tend to hold up better. Maybe it is true. Maybe it is not. I can say they shoot great and several have had many rounds down them.
As far as looks, it does not matter to me. It is a tool I use to hunt with. I am not entering a fashion show with it and I really do not care what others think. I know it works well for me and that is what matters.

SS all the way. My junk gets used in all kinds of conditions even directly in the snow. I sleep better at night knowing I have some added rust prevention with a stainless barrel. Lots of shooters believe it wears slower and shoots a bit faster than CM steel. I happen to be one of them.

                      Depends on you

If you are lazy or forgetful then stainless is probably best. I'm always fussing over my equipment so the fear of rust or corrosion isn't a factor to me.

Does that include a damp or snowy hunting trip? Ive never had time to take my rifle apart and clean/oil mid hunt. I have had rust start where my skin touched a blued barrel several times same day. I might be lazy but SS is moor better.
