Guys how good is the Remington Model 788 in 308 caliber. I hear that it is what to be the 700 version back in the dayz. But also one bad thing I seach was the safety switch. Anyhow besides that What good experiment and bad experiment with the model 788.

The 788 usually shoot really well.
The Achilles heel is the bolt handle but in 30+ years I have never broken one off and I own several of them. The next thing competitive shooters don't like is the locking lugs on the back of the bolt instead of up front. This allows the bolt to compress more on high end loads.
Canjar makes triggers for the 788 but getting one is almost impossible. I had my gunsmith make some up for my rifles and he charged me more than I paid for the rifles brand new.
When Remington decided to drop the 788 they boxed them up in large boxes with 9 or 12 rifles in each box all of a different chambering. Dealer pricing made an already inexpensive rifle even better.
I agree with the poster above that spare magazines are now $50+ each.
You will have no problems with the rifle for hunting and it should shoot lights out.
Notice in my picture the trigger shoe.Last edited by LynnJr; 07-17-2016, 8:32 AM.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

I have a lefty that I bought in 1975 for $104.95. It's killed deer, elk, hogs, antelope, bear, coyotes and a ton of small game over the years but I haven't shot it in at least 15 years.
I broke the bolt handle off in 1995 or so but had it repaired better than new.
After many thousands of rounds, the throat is washed out and I have more than .250" jump to the lands but it will still put 5 bullets into an inch at 100 yards.
One of these days I'll get a new barrel installed just for the heck of it.Frank

I have them in 7-08 carbine and another in 222 Remington rifle. They are distinct from the Remington 700 in that they have rear locking lugs, a shorter bolt lift and detach magazine. Wood is either walnut (earlier version) or walnut stained hardwood. The receiver is a fairly closed designed and very rigid, the action has a very fast lock time. There's nothing wrong with their safety.
The Remington 788 is a very well made "economy" rifle that usually has excellent accuracy. My 222 Remington shoots pretty much everything very well, usually under 1" @ 100 yds or better. It can't quite match a Cooper or Anschutz, but it's not that far behind and cost me about 1/5th as much.
If you check GunBroker you'll find a fair number for sale. I think some of the prices requested are a bit of a stretch, but there are deals and LGS prices are generally better. I'm always on the lookout for another.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment

I have an 18.5" barrelled 308 chambered 788 as my pig gun.

It shot the 165gr GMX's into about a 3/4" group at 100yds when I zeroed it last.

Made about 1980 IIRC - carbine length only.
About 3 years back I was at Krauswerks in San Mateo and they had 3 or 4 "new in box" that some fellow had just dropped off. The Big 5 price tag was still on each box - about $129.00 IIRC. I grabbed the 222 and the 7-08 at the same time. Paid about $325.00 for each 788, which was very nice of them.
I put a Redfield 3 to 9 on the 08, a Redfield fixed 12X on the 222 - both scopes probably made about the same time as the rifles.Last edited by dfletcher; 06-09-2016, 2:09 PM.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment
