    Type of competition

Can someone explain this class of competition/rifle to me?

Why does the bolt pull free?
Is the stock on roller bearings?
What makes that gun weigh almost 50lbs?

Does this "set up" remove human error?

Ask LynnJR~ he and a couple others are qualified best to answer, but he seems the most passionate about BR.

      1. He removed the bolt stop. Shoots a 300 WM & the port was too small to eject the cases. Came up w/ this solution to shoot more rapidly.

      2. Probably not. Most likely a well worn sandbag with moly spray or baby powder or powdered wax, etc. Something to make it slippery in the bags.

      3. Large diameter, long barrel. Lead added to the stock.

      4. No. Plenty of opportunities for human error still.

SwitchBarrel is the 2015 NBRSA 1000 Yard National Champion and he owns that same stock but his is purple and green if my memory is any good.
My gun in the picture above weighs right at 45 pound's.
I added rails to mine so it is now 6 inches wide at the forend.
The front and rear bags are leather filled with heavy Zircon sand then are placed in laundry starch for 2-3 days until they are completely mushy and slimy. When you pull them out of the starch you hose them off and mount them in the rest then place the gun on them until they harden up for about a week.
After that you can put wax like that used on pills to coat the bags.
I put mine in the bed of my truck and strap a stock on it using a motorcycle tie down straps. The motion of the truck allows the stock to slide back and forth turning the bag dark in color and settling the sand in the bags.
The rails keep the gun level in the bags. If you run a flat bottomed stock and you lift the bolt handle and slam it closed the rocking motion makes the sand move to the middle of the bag and this in turn makes the gun rock even more.
The stock is a McMillan 50 Caliber HBR and they weigh around 12 pounds the actions weigh around 6-8 pounds the scope weighs a fraction over 2 pounds and the rest is barrel weight.
My barrel is 1.450 diameter for 32 inches and the last time I saw SwitBarrels gun his was 2 inches with a bit of taper.

Bench guns generally don't have bolt locks because bolts are removed when not on the line. Also because, it's a long cartridge in shorter action as Switchbarrel explained.

Plenty of barrel weight mostly and because the rules allow heavy guns.

Here is a video showing John Buhay shooting a 90 pound 6 Dasher at Williamsport Pennsylvania at the original 1000 yard club.
His stock is all aluminum and the forend and buttstock are parallel and perpendicular.
Notice how easily it slides in the bags.
The purple tape let's you see the recoil.
By the way if your in Northern California you can shoot my heavygun.
They are very fun to shoot and no recoil as you don't touch the buttpad. You let the gun recoil and push it forward with your shoulder.
Here is Australia's Jeff Rogers shooting his own creation.

The action is a modified 700 made into a drop port so the empty cases eject out of the bottom rather than the side. He made the stock as well and his barrel is tensioned with a outside tube.

In the second video with Australia's Jeff Rogers he is using a stretcher gun or tension barreled gun.
They sandwich a large round plate between the action and the barrel like a very large recoil lug.
They do the same thing at the muzzle and put a large diameter tube over the original barrel.
Looks like a barrel over a barrel. They then fill the hollow space with radiator coolant.
The idea is the same as Bill Calder's "Stopped Muzzle" where a node is placed at the crown.
Jeff sent me some tubing from Australia after he sonic checked it.
There is very little load development involved as all powder charges shoot well.
You simply add powder until you reach pressure signs and call it good. The only load work up is finding the correct seating depth.
The poster here who goes by AFTI would never be able to figure that out but most 1000 yard group records used that technology when I got out of that type of competition.

To avoid the wind changing in direction or speed, most will fire a String in seconds. Load on one side and the empties come out the other, or out the bottom if a drop-port.

Exactly as Bob has posted. They want all the shots off in the same condition before the wind gets a chance to slowdown or speed up.
You can really get the smaller cartridges dialed in but they still have the same problems with distance.
The big cartridges tend to really heat up when making a fast run so by shot 6-7 you are already on the edge of popping a primer or tougher than normal ejection.

Do they do this type of competition in Coalinga?

It doesn't appear that the Coalinga Club itself runs any Benchrest matches. Just High Power, F-Class and Service Rifle.

                            F-Class is sort of bellybenchrest.

They shoot the heavyguns at Sacramento and at Ojai.
At Coalinga they shoot very similar heavyguns when they hold the FCSA matches for the 50 BMG.
My 50BMG heavygun weighs 94 pounds. The barrel weighs 32 pounds all by itself.
Hopefully CSACannoneer or 50BMGBob can post some match dates so you can check them out. In 50 caliber competition they have 4 classes. Lightgun which is under 32 pounds heavygun which is under 50 pounds unlimited class which doesn't have a weight restriction and a Spotter class shot off of bipods.
50BMGBob I believe runs the matches at Coalinga so he is the guy in the know.
If you ever make it up to Santa Rosa you can shoot my heavyguns and I guarantee you a 5 shot group under 1/4 inch with you doing that easily.
