Current productions (2015+) Remlins are fine. I did not fire one, but I examined 1895 Guide Gun and Model 336 at the store and fit and finish was fine, no better or worse then old Marlins. I would not hesitate to buy one if they had what I wanted.

A takedown lever rifle is a very good choice for a bug-out shtf gun.

It'll fit in a jam packed car, a boat, an ATV, a small aircraft, or in your backpack for on foot, on a bicycle, on a scooter, or on a motorcycle.

It's also easy to put in a drybag for an extended raft/kayak trip.

It's also good for long backpacking trips.

It's also good for a trunk gun.

There's lot's of uses for a small, compact, easy storing takedown rifle.

"Long backpacking trips"? Are you willing to carry an extra 6-8lbs?
Backpackers that travel long distances are minimalist. That sort of rifle would be the first thing left at home...just sayin'.

Browning makes lever action takedowns that use a magazine instead of tube feed.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

Way back in the day a take down made sense as you could put it in your suitcase while traveling on the stagecoach or train making one less item to carry. Today it's a curiosity. My ideal lever is a Winchester 16" 44 Mag without the lame push button safety.

Takedown? I'm still trying to figure out what carbines are good for besides mounted calvalrymen.

Depends on what the backpacking trip is for and where you're going.

I've been on a backpacking/fishing trip with lots of big brown's around. I was jealous of the pack leader who had a takedown 45-70. Others had heavy 44 mags. I'd rather have had that takedown 45-70 than those 44's on that trip.

I've also been on extended self supported backpack hunting trips. A takedown would have been a lot nicer than the full length rifles we were packing. If I did it again, I'd use a Grendel AR that I could break down.

I've also done extended backpacking trips for fishing where I took a 22 rifle for fun plinking and rabbit dinners. There's not much difference between that 5 pound 22 and a 7 pound centerfire rifle.

And yes, I'm a weight weenie. I like my rifles light as well as the rest of my gear. BTW, my lever action .357 only weighs 5 pounds, the same as my 22 semi-auto. If I were to do one of those fishing trips again with a 22, I'd buy a Marlin Papoose though (3.25 pounds).

When in Vegas, check out Wild West Guns.... they have some awesome bush guns they came up with for Alaska

Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

If you are backpacking in dangerous bear country, bear spray and a 45/70 at the ready are necessities. A 45/70 broke down and stuffed into a pack is nothing more than extra weight.
Ultralight, self sustained backpacking trips that cover many, many miles where a bear encounter is not likely, bear spray is your friend. Now if you need something to harvest small game for the pot, a one pound rifle in 22lr will do the trick.
                      There are a couple options.

Here's my takedown 30-30, Savage 99 from 1920. The only reason to take it down is so it fits in the sweet wooden case.

Of the Henry or the Winchester, I'd go Henry. The lower price is nice, but Henry copied the Marlin action, which is better than the Winchester. As others have said, you should be able to find a used Marlin 336 for half of a new Henry.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

Take down rifles are cool. I like in the movies how a guy snaps together a sniper-rifle with 26" barrel and scope from an uber small container.

The 45-70 was attached to the pack during all the open territory hiking where you could see a long way. It usually only came out when you couldn't see as well and the going was slower. Anytime we approached a sketchy looking area, it would come out.

The 45-70 was also used for overwatch. One person always took the high ground or 6 while the others fished. All the anglers rotated the overwatch role.

The long way in and long way out, which was most of the hiking mileage, the gun was packed in 2 separate scabbards. One short scabbard was on his back where he could reach behind his head and pull the front half out. The back half was in a second short scabbard on his right side of the pack. He could pull them both out and put it together in about 10 seconds without taking his pack off.

And yes, we all had bear spray. But you hear lots of stories up there where bear spray isn't all it's made out to be. Most of them are unreported incidents.

The 22 rifle (not the AK trip) was mostly used for plinking fun once we pitched camp. A semi-auto is far more fun than a single shot.
