To be honest I might just out an iron sight to start and throw a optic on later.

EBay has several USGI 03A3 rear sights listed right now starting at $12.00

Do you have a caliper or some other way to measure the front sight height? If you want to give me that measurement I'll compare it to my 1903A3's USGI front sight height then you'll know if it will work with the issue rear sight.

No I don't have any calipers. I can use a tape measure if that'll work. I've been watching the sights your talking about . I'll get a measurement on the front sight height when I get home from work. Right on for all the help man

Sorry to leave you hangin', I had a night out on the town a week ago and I'm just pulling into home now...Just kidding, here you go.

I measured it from the bottom of the barrel, not the band,to the top of the post, just like you did, and in the picture below it looks just under 1.5" and with my calipers it's 1.445" from the top of the post to the bottom of the barrel.

I think the USGI rear sight will work with your aftermarket front sight, it might pattern high a few inches at 100-yards but you can adjust for it with sight alignment and/or a hold-under.

That's a Williams rear sight base. All you need is a blade to slide into the dovetail and you'll have your rear sight set up. Blades are available from Brownells, Midway or Williams direct. Very common & cheap.

Shop rifle parts (2,674) at Brownells, including barrels, stocks, triggers, and bolt carriers to customize, repair, or upgrade your rifle’s performance.

The sight base has a few set screws on it for windage & elevation. You could also get a front sight hood to slip over the bead, that's what those slots in the side of the front sight base are for.

So I got an original sight for the rifle and it lines up perfect thankfully. But it looks like its missing the set screw. Does any one know why type of screw I can use as a replacement or if I need an original one.

The screw is a #5-40 flat, slotted, machine screw.

Guess I got to say something...I'm an old duffer and was running a gun shop in Fort Collins Colorado in the 50's while going to college....Milsurps (all kinds....03's, 03A3's, K98's, Trapdoors, model 1917's ,etc) were absolutely a dime a dozen...every shop had barrels full of them...Sears sold them in the stores and in the catalog, The American Rifleman Magazine had 03A3's for sale in the 60's for about $20...the going prices were in the $20-$35 range for about anything...

Based on going to college (my cost total was about $300 a month with a family and my tuition was $210 a quarter) and earnings if we were going to hunt...and hunt we did...I've cut up more milsurps for myself and others during those days than most people have ever seen...I don't do it now and have no reason but the only thing we had to shoot in those days were what we could afford...you ever carry a 1917 Enfield in "battle dress" elk hunting in the high country? We cut all the excess off..put on decent sights and fed our families...again, I don't cut up anything any more and have not for many years...but I'll buy a well done one whenever I get the chance...don't hunt but do appreciate fine walnut and good handwork and bluing...shot my beautiful K98 today and it shoots as good as it did "back when"...probably a lot better.

Just want to ask folks to try and understand we are not all bubbas...I fed my family on deer and elk and antelope killed with converted milsurps...I killed more ducks and pheasants than many have seen with an 1897 Winchester that cost me $10. If you are too sensitive to appreciate people doing what they to exist or to participate in a general hobby can it's unfortunate...you can't change history no matter how hard you might try...

I also grew up with some beautiful cars later on....63 Corvette, MG TD, 66 Buick Electra Convertible...69 GTO Judge, etc...I watched people cut them up...make gassers...swap engines..."modernize" them, etc...it went with the times and the main thing was when they owned the cars..they were their cars to do with as they pleased...to tub the rear end of a dead nuts original Judge is criminal but it was sold to him and his business...he was no bubba...he was an owner...same with guns.

CMP now does custom gunsmithing. You may want to contact them and ask them what it would take it restore it to original military condition. May be worth it if you want an original. I do know they do excellent work, and would use all original military parts if available.

                              Well said, opos!!

Sporterizing is a fine American tradition. Taking the implements of war and repurposing them for continued use is the epitome of the American spirit.

And as you said, some of the work is flat out beautiful...customs stocks, fine bluing, etc.
You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.
                              Come on...what harm??

Nice rifle. I bought two a few years back. One Was original with a sporterized stock, the other was drilled and tapped. I found an original stock on here with most of the hardware for $20. It needed to be refinished but came out great. Shoots good with the stock iron sights.

Keep an eye out on here and stuff pops up.
