Mitch is The King Of 2054 Yards Again

    Shooters
We held another 2054 yard match today and Mitch won it for the third time in a row shooting a standard 338 Lapua in cold and windy conditions.
    Congratulations Mitch!!!
Shaun Brady earned an achievement point today as well.
We had two new shooters today one had to leave early and one stayed until 3:30PM.
Roberts combination didn't have enough elevation so I had him shoot my 338 Snipe-Tac and he got 2 hits on his first three shots at 2054 yards making him our quickest hitting Shooter ever. Way to go Robert. His next shots started out with two more hits so this guy is going to be one to watch at future events. On his first ever record string he came up one hit short of Mitch and he was shooting this gun for the first time.
The day would have gone much quicker but we had light issues that required several trips to the gong.
We thought we had it ironed out only to have WhiteMamba shoot a T post into two pieces.
Apollo had his radio set up on the T post that didn't get hit but the listening device went down with the gong ripping up the wires and cracking the display.
Despite all the issues it was a great learning day.
Shakey was shooting a 763 grain bullet on top of 248 grains of powder and all that was left of his bullets after hitting the gong was the boattails.

Thanks for the AAR, Lynn. Looks like a great time.
You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.

Stupid people don't know they are stupid. Because they are stupid. They will follow evil geniuses and do their bidding, because they are stupid.

Really super stupid people look up to, and follow stupid people like they were geniuses, because to them, they are. Unfortunately the reality of it is, that doesn't make stupid people any smarter.

That right there is the root cause to most problems in the world.

Another great day of shooting. Some cool stuff on display - Lynn's SnipeTac is definitely something to be experienced, and the 30 Cal Conspiracy continued to do way better than anyone thought possible with a 300WM. Something interesting to note is that we had at least 3 shooters hitting 2050 yards with bullet speeds well above transsonic.

For my part, I learned (another) lesson about the value of good data. It turns out that my Prochrono was recording my DTC bullets about 200 fps slower than their true speed, which translated to my shots going 4-5 mils higher than I had calculated. Someone (sorry, I forgot your name!) loaned me a LabRadar and helped me get things sorted out. Next time I'm going to back down the powder a bit and try to get the bullets in their ~2800fps "happy place".

Thanks Lynn! I really appreciate everything you're doing to produce these awesome matches. Especially after nearly high-centering my truck on the way to resuscitate the gong White Mamba killed.

I would like to lay claim to the four 338 cal splashes forming a nearly perfect water line on that gong image. But, it could have been any of the 338 shooters handy work. Looking at the impact craters; those have to be SnipeTac hits. Who was the guy running a SnipeTac?

Checkout Apollo's image of the guy wearing the 30 cal conspiracy hoody. If you follow the barrel on the rifle to his left you can see a single white pixel in the cut below the ridge line. That's the gong!

                Cheers,

The lab radar was supplied by Focus. It is nice that Mitch a d Shaun bring there units and let the rest of us get a look at our velocities. They are definitely easier to set up than a Oehler.

When I went to pick up the gong and lights the center of the berm had a swipe about 1 foot wide so I think your skidplate took the brunt of it. I wasn't looking for running board hits but I didn't see any either.
I had a couple shooters ask me what gun you were using and what Ohaus scale and what guy on eBay did you get it from.
The Snipe-Tac has left the range for now until the dies show up. The brass is just starting to get tight and I have no accurate way of seating the bullets. Right now I am pushing the bullets into the case neck using a upside down bump die and the variation is very wide. When the dies finally make it here then look out.

The SnipeTac round is the 408 Chey-Tac case necked down to 338 with less body taper and a slightly steeper neck.
It pushes a 300 grain bullet to 3465 fps but best accuracy is from 3300 - 3350 fps.
When my dies finally arrive I am going to try some of the 255 grain Flatline bullets as close to 3700 fps as I can get them.

                            My Ohaus analytical balance

I am using an old Ohaus AV264CN analytical balance. I bought it on close out in June of 2014 from NevadaWeighing. It seems they only have the latest models at the moment. Here is one listed on fleabay

This balance has a few things going for it.
1> Magnetic force restoration load cell. This means its fast and doesn't drift.
2> Internal accuracy of 0.0001 grams. That means it can measure 0.002 grains. Good enough to measure broken sticks of powder.
3> It has an internal calibration weight. So, it is very repeatable.

Unfortunately the new ones cost 3 to 4 times what I paid. The only other brand that I would consider is Sartorious. My daughter is a production chemist and uses Sartorious.

My rig is a Surgeon Rifles "Remedy". I did replace the factory 20" barrel with a 30" Bartlein.

                            Cheers,

Mitch - Thank you for the scale link and other tips on Sunday.

This is the chambering flush system pump we discussed:

                              And the cutting fluid:

I'm not sure how that pump would handle thicker cutting fluids. Depending on caliber, it's giving 50-60 psi at the pump discharge with the Ultraslick mixed a little heavy and I showed you the video of the flow past the reamer. The surface finish this stuff leaves is remarkable.

The fluid isn't available in smaller containers and it only takes about 5 cups to mix 3 gallons. I'd be glad to donate a couple quarts to your cause if you bring the container. If you decide to buy your own, I bought mine on a Enco 25% off / free shipping day.

As always, a big thanks to Lynn for the effort you put into hosting these matches.
