What about a handi-rifle in 223? Single barrel break action. Those can be had on the cheap.

Handled all 3 today, gotta say I was disappointed in the savage. It feels cheap. I really liked the ruger, and the 783 wasn't as awful as it looks. Leaning towards the ruger at this point.

The Howa is a well made rifle for the price, and the Stirling optic on it will get the job done.

Like I said YOUR money, YOUR rifle and therefore YOUR choice.
That said the Ruger is an excellent choice. I have an American as well as the older Tang safety M77 rifles. I like them very much and have taken quite a bit of game with them.

Check out the weatherby vanguard its in your price range. I like them compare to the others. It's a little bit heavier but depending on your uses shouldn't be a problem.

Look for an older rifle in any flavor it will be a higher quality rifle.

I think the plastic stock feels cheap on all of them.

I'd go with the Ruger American due to the adjustable trigger. All three guns are nice affordable rifles, Go to you LGS and crop a feel on them and do what's in your budget and what you get a good deal on.

+1 on 223 rd. Good training, affordable, and makes a good bang for a 22 cal.

I have good luck with Hornady Steel Match 223. about 40 cents per round. sub MOA in my MVP.

Had a Savage Axis XP (not accutrigger). Good little gun.

Mine specifically stated 223 only, not 556. And it hated aluminum cased ammo. They'd chamber and fire fine but half of them would jam in the chamber and it'd take 5 minutes to pry it out.
