    Mossberg Patriot with scope

Anyone know what that screw is for (circled in red)? The two images below are from Mossberg's site but the reviews I see on YouTube of this identical rifle (w/ scope) does not have this screw in the stock.

It is a crossbolt and used to strengthen the stock. Just leave it alone as it does not need adjusting at any time.
Some rifles have them some do not.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Is there a tool commonly available to release it to remove the stock?

I am sure one could be made or bought but why would you want to mess with it.

I wouldn't. I just like the option should I want to remove the stock (either to clean or on the remote chance changing out the stock should it get damaged).

UPDATE: As a matter of record, I called Mossberg. The crossbolt is an upgrade (rifles with a wood stock didn't originally have one) and it does not impeded with remove the stock.

You don't need to mess with it. Cross bolt has nothing to do with removing the stock.

The "Cross-bolt" is a semi-permanent stock reinforcement feature.

                Consider it a permanent feature.
