Beginner long range target rifle?

Hey guys I've been looking for a long range bolt gun to do some target shooting with. I'm leaning towards one chambered in .223 . Do you guys have any suggestions?

What's your definition of Long range?
Buddies that hunt consider 300yds and under short to moderate. 500yds being about the limit they'll go ethically.

I have seen guys setup for 600+, $ is big in everything so I don't pay much attention to them.

My local ranges top out at 300yds, I stick with .308 168gr GMM....but in a pinch m80 ball is fine for paper.

Is your idea of a long range shot a man sized silhouette or larger?
Are you trying to get teenie tiny groups?
Are you happy just figuring it out with non match ammo at 100yds on a deer/man sized target and a fixed 4x scope?

Long range for me would be about 300-400 yards. Shooting at targets and shoot some paper as well from a bench of course.

Then, you can go Ruger RPR. For $1,200-$1,500 you will get essentially a gun that you can grow into, and will be accurate enough to even compete with if that is your thing. Put on a custom barrel and you basically have a custom gun and will act like a $3K+ gun.

If the $1,200-$1,500 price is too steep, then go with a standard Remington 700 or Savage of some sort. Lots of guns in the $400-$900 range, just take your pick on which one looks good for you.

For the OP's 400 yd distance, there are actually a lot of good options. But agreed on time telling what the OP will need/want.

Assuming that the $600-$750 range is just for the rifle, i. e. before optics, then I'd also add the Winchester 70 to the list of choices. As with the Rem or Savage, I'd go used.

On the other hand, if the OP's budget includes a scope, I'd be looking at either Savage's 10/110 Trophy Hunter XP package, or a Ruger American Rifle with Redfield Revolution Accu-Range.

If this is a rifle to learn how to shoot out to 400 yards then the .223 is nearly ideal. It will be excellent in the wind (but not too excellent so you'll learn to read wind), commercial match ammo is plentiful and cheaper than any other match ammo and it's idiot proof to reload for.

Doing it for your price is going to be the hard part, however if you have an AR already you could buy a national match upper for about $750 and you'd have the best midrange (to 600 yards) training rifle possible for the cost and the trigger time.

Mossberg MVP varmint got one for 525$ a couple weeks ago should work nice out to 400 yards with 9 in one twist I am hoping it shoots the lead free . I four different loads ready to try if can get sometime to go to the range.
