Find a builder and get a custom one built just for you. That's if you have the $$ for it. If not, get a good action and work from there.

There's always options. My budget was limited to $0.00 but I had items I no longer shot. The items I didn't shoot went bye bye.

A Tikka or CZ in 6.5x55 with a 3x9 Nikon Monarch

The 6.5 Swede is a sweetheart of a hunting caliber and is easy to shoot well.

There are similar calibers like .260 Remington and 6.5 Creedmore that duplicate ballistics and may be found a little easier.

Don't skimp on good mounts and rings for your scope.
Nikon Monarch is good to go.

                ^^^^ You got that right.
I really like my Tikka in 6.5X55 and boy does it shoot.
If I did not reload I would get one in 260Rem. The American 6.5X55 ammo is downloaded because lawyer concerns about some of the old Mauser action Mil surplus rifle. European ammo is loaded hotter.---Guess they are not a sue happy as we are and maybe their shooter are a bit smarter also
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

If you are just hunting once or twice a year you really don't need to sink too much money into it.

I plan on hunting multiple times a year once I have the equipment and have enough time with experienced hunters to go out on my own.

Mine has a Leupold VX-1 scope and shoots better than I am capable of. It is a reloaders dream. As much as I love the 6.5 Swede, I would steer away from it too. The Sako ammo is good stuff but high dollar. I had to pay to get mine from out of state since no one stocked one in 6.5 Swede. A .308 would be ideal for California hunting.
OP, go to Turners when you are in LA and check one out. They have Vortex Crossfire II's in 3-9 x 40 for $140 right now. A Tikka/Vortex combo gets you a very accurate rifle for about $800.

I've got a weatherby vanguard in 30-06 that I love! Threw a 4-14 Nikon on it for a couple hundred bucks and I'm good to go. Found it used in the marketplace here. If I were to buy new, it would be a savage 11/111 or 10/110 in 270 win. Comes with a decent Nikon scope as part of the package.

Any of the recommended rifles should work fine. Much of it boils down to taste. For instance the RAR, Axis, 783 and Tikka have very small ejection ports which make it difficult to single feed a cartridge and more importantly to me, make it much more difficult to clear a jam. Not a big deal to some people but to me it is. That is why I prefer the Vanguard, 700 ADL and Howa.

When it comes to optics you have to decide for yourself. I try to get customers to look through several brands of scopes because most of them will see better out of one of them. $200.00 will get you a 3-9x40 that will allow you to take coyote, hog and deer out to 400 yards. Burris Fullfield II and Vortex Diamondback fall in that category. If you jump up to $400.00-$500.00 you are getting much more scope. Over $500.00 and the scopes are better but the law of diminishing returns comes in to play. Just my two cents.
