    Precision/Hunting Rifle Build HELP

Well I have been doing some research but there are so many options and I was hoping the forum members here could help me out with my decision.

    Budget - $2000 Rifle, $1000 optics…+/- $2-300 for each

Use - Hunting game from deer size to elk size and punching paper at distance

What I have thought about… Shilen barreled action, kind of costly @$1500 so that would eat a lot of the rifle budget….or possibly buying a Remington 700 action and going custom from there…

    My questions….
What would be a good caliber for my needs? I do not reload but plan to in the future, plenty of friends that reload...
If I go the 700 action route would I want/need custom work done to the action itself or is it good as is?
What would you get with that same budget/needs? i.e action, barrel, trigger, stock, scope, etc...

    A little about me...
Hiking in the hills with weight is a cake walk for me so I am not worried about rifle weight if it will perform better…many seasons as a hotshot for the USFS
Lots of time in the outdoors hunting but I have never owned a scoped rifle, always had a friends rifle to use if I needed one…
Lots of time shooting ARs, AKs, and pistols….so I will be a newbie in the long range department but would like a rifle that I could grow into as I gain experience...

    Thanks for the input...

Thanks for the info, I will check that stuff out…also if it were better to spend more on the scope and less on the rifle that option works for me too...

Mine are Savage 110 7mm Rem mag and Ruger 77 280 Rem. If I was going to build a new one, maybe a Remington 783 in 280 or 7mag.

Wouldn't the 300 win mag just ruin a deer?

My engineer swears by the 7mm mag, I haven't shot one personally tho…I recently read a field and stream article that said a 270 will do pretty much the same thing a 7mm mag will do?….there is always the 30-06 but I don't see many custom rifles built in 30-06

Never heard of that. The 280AI will get close though.

Or would it be practical since I'm new to buy a Remington 5R for $1200 and put a new trigger and some good glass on it?

Just about any modern rifle is going to give you the accuracy that hunters only dreamed of 20yrs ago. In the 80's 2 MOA was considered to be a keeper. My Dad's beloved Winchester 88' is a 3 MOA Gun all day. Yet he has taken lots of deer and elk with it in the last 51yrs.

                      That would work really well.

I think this would be a good scope

Yeah, but he's not looking for hunting accuracy. He said he wants a long range target gun that he can hunt with and weight doesn't matter. So, let's build him a long range target gun in an appropriate cartridge for the game he seeks.

I would agree with .300 WM in a 26 inch medium palma barrel (not like I have experience with the stuff as I'm no long range shooter). Or .300 WSM in a short action. .30-06 would work well too. Depending on what he thinks of as long range, 7x57, 280, 7 WSM, or maybe even the new 28 Nosler! Hand loading can keep the velocities sane for shorter range deer engagements.

As for whether or not .300 WM will destroy a deer. Speed kills, and bruises. The bruising you get from fast bullets that open quickly ruins meat. Load reduced velocity ammo for hunting stuff at short range and you're good to go.

Though like I said, I'm not a long ranger shooter, I just read the forum.

I would pick a bullet first that way you can build around it for your various pursuits.
I like the heavy 7mm bullets so I would go with a proven one like the 180 grain Berger Hunting VLD.
From there I would pick a chambering that can push it around 3000 fps without a lot of throat erosion.
Next since weight isn't an issue I would go 28 inches as it gives more velocity at no additional cost and one can always cut it down.
On the action I would go with a Remington 700 long action so the bullets can be seated correctly and a magazine can still be used.
                          Trigger would be a Jewell.
Base would have 30 moa built into it like a Ken Farrel.
Rings would be Burris XTR Signature rings.
The stock will get me in trouble but I shoot and hunt mainly long distance so it would be a McMillan Hunter Benchrest stock.
                          Action $425
                          Barrel $340
                          Trigger $200
                          Stock $500
                          Assembly $$$
                          Chambering 7 RSAUM.
