Rossi M92 sight upgrade, loading gate questions

I picked up an M92 in .357 with a 20" barrel back in January on sale at Davidson's. Like <$500 OTD. Just had it out today for the first time. Cycled .357 and .38, perfect POI at 25 yards, nice trigger too. Pretty happy with it.

    My only complaints:

    - the rear sight tension is poor, so the leaf spring won't hold the elevation blade steady. Any better sights to replace it with? Can't say I like the sight picture of the buckhorn much either.

    - the loading gate is sharp. I'd like to smooth it out. What could I use to do so? Do I need to reblue, even if I just smooth out the edge?

I read up a bunch on these rifles, and there was talk about lemons. FWIW, the fit and finish is pretty nice, it cycles smoothly, and the wood is more than decent. Maybe Taurus upped their game a bit? I wouldn't hesitate to get another, and I probably will, a 16" stainless.

I put a marbles bullseye rear sight on mine.

You can file the edges of the loading gate with a needle file, you'll need to protect the gate itself and you have to cold blue the edge/

Taking apart the 92 is tricky. I've done it multiple times and it prefer to leave it together if I can get away with it. Softening the edges of the loading gate should be doable without dissambly.

I used this combo on one of mine...

You might try turning the ramp around. The last R92 I bought had the same problem. Are you bottomed out on the ramp? All 3 R92's I have shot high and needed new front sights.

          .
I bought a blued 16" .357 R92 and it was near-perfect from the box. Six o'clock hold on 25 yds, bullseye hold on 100 yds, ringing steel every time.

One thing you might do (if you liked the semibuckhorn sight pic, that is...) is remove the rear sight and tension it (bend it) then reinstall. Should hold the elevation, then.

Yes, file, then cold-blue the gate opening... but I'd take the gun apart first. The action should be cleaned of it's manufacturing debris. Plenty of how-to's on yewtewb.

Man! I'd love a 16" stainless version. I'd buy one in a heartbeat (cuz .357 is all done in 16"; no need for a longer barrel unless you're handloading).

An advantage of the 20" is the 10 + 1 capacity. Since we're limited to 10 rounds, many want those extra 2 rounds. Many also find the 20" the most aesthetically pleasing barrel length while not jeopardizing it's handiness.

sight radius is the biggest advantage for me. I shoot my 24" way better then my 16"

I'm not a fan of the buckhorn rear sight, either. I've been considering a Skinner sight for my 20" .454 Rossi. I've heard good stuff about them. The other alternative for me is the one that replaces the safety (the one from Steve's)

Skinner sights work well. You may have to file the sight's dovetail a bit as they are usual a few thousandths oversize. I agree that taking a Rossi apart can be tough to get back together. Especially the barrel band bolt. It can be under a lot of pressure and problematic to get to thread back together.
