Thinking about building a m40A5 clone. Advice needed

    Hello my fellow Calgunners,

I'm thinkin about building a m40A5 clone (hopefully not that expensive, I've seen the 5k GAP) I have a couple parts already sitting.

I was thinking about grabbing a Remington Short action receiver, but then decided to find a 24-25" r700 instead. Any particular model of the r700 should I be looking for? I'm hoping for something I still can shoot as I'm building.

    Short action .308 (obviously)
25" barrel (24" from the lug) 1:12 twist hopefully
Trigger guard that accepts detachable box mags (i know I need a BO M5 DBM)

I'm not too familiar with all the Remington 700 models (since there are so many now) so in trying to find one that would get me real close.

Any recommendations is a plus. Thanks in advance

An M40A5 would be parkerized finish so your best 700 to build from would be a 700P.
It also comes with the correct trigger that is on the M40A5.

twomanattack is a great resource for M40's. The M40a3 and M40a5 have a iron oxide finish on the Schneider barrel.

          Wouldn't a 5r be a better canvas?

            It would be more accurate.
It's stainless steel though so it won't take parkerizing.
If you are painting it and NOT rebarrelling into a proper M40 contour barrel, then the 5r is the better one to build with.
If you are rebarrelling with a higher quality barrel and want a corrrect parkerized finish, you need a regular chromoly receiver.

Ok. I didn't know they were actually parked. The couple I played with had so many layers of paint on them it would probably require a hammer to get it off.

Any idea why remington sells the 5r in SS (and iirc, have only seen SS flavors) when the correct material would be carbon or moly (yes/no?).

Albeit not everyone wants a m40...

What would you go with randall? Not for clone, but as an accurate shooter?

Stainless is easier and more precise to machine so stainless barrels are easier to make WELL.
That's why almost all high end barrels are stainless.
As for why they used stainless for the reciever, it's probably so it matches the barrel.
                I really don't know.

I prefer a stainless receiver with a glass bead blasted finish over a parkerized chromoly receiver.
If you simply want the barrelled action with the most accurate barrel on it, get the 5R.
If you were going to rebarrel the gun, any receiver will do.

So... Do I look for a 700p or do I look for a SS 700 (let me know which models have a SS 5r barrel)
I don't mind the SS barrels

You want the Remington Model Number 29663.
That is a specific configuration of stainless 700 with the special 5R Milspec barrel.

They have this one too http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=547284957 comes park eroded. I really wanted it but I bought what was available to me here in ca. My build was also inspired by the m40a5. I have zero of the correct parts but it kinda looks like one imo, LOL
                      Have a good day!
