    Range Report: RUGER 77/357

    Well...

Had the RUGER 77/357 out recently.

Coupla $16/50 boxes of FM 158 gr. FP

    2->3 MOA w/ the Leupold VX-1 2-7 X 33mm scope from field positions.

Loaded w/ FM 158 gr. XTP or Barnes 140 gr XPB? should be fine for coastal deer and Javelina, and small to medium sized boar.

Very low recoil and fun to shoot.

(Wish they made Tech-sights for it.)

"From field positions"..........excellent; glad to see someone else is off the bench. Field shooting techniques are one aspect of shooting that has declined in the last thirty years or so, although I suspect that is a result of the design of many shooting ranges.
I hope to someday have a pair of those Rugers; one in .357, and another in .44 Magnum. They looked to be well made.

Check these out, I have them on my 77/357.
NECG - New England Custom Gun - Peep sights.
They mount to the integral scope base on the rifle.
Fully adj. for windage and elevation.
I also added a fiber optic front sight.

If you find that it is not chambering smoothly, especially w/ non-crimped rounds?

          Give a holler or PM.

There's a little fix you can do.

Any cartridge feeding issues that you observed?

Ken Waters would have had a lot of fun working up Pet Loads for that rifle!

Might be interesting to review the rifle loads he developed for 357 even though they are dated now.

There may be an issue w/ the extractor that is easily remedied.

                There was w/ mine.

Planning thermonuclear H110/HDY 180 gr. XTP loads.

Should be good for ~ 1800 fps/1300 lb-ft at the muzzle...

                  ...and 1100 fps/483 lb-ft at 300 yards.

While I may not be able to use this, depending on bullet shape, in a tubular magazine, I sure do like the sound of it!

To quote someone well-known (Paco Kelly?) ".357 magnum from a rifle barrel is a whole different animal."

I have levers chambered in .357 (Marlin 1894CS and Rossi's Model 1892 clone) that are endless fun to shoot (but you already know that). Point being that what I find more surprising are off-the-shelf Fiocchi or American Eagle 240 gr LSP .44 magnum from a Browning 92: easy to shoot well, easy on the shoulder but holy Toledo Ohio the horsepower! I like to call it a .45-70 Short. Hahrr.

Looking forward, sir! to your results and shooting impressions of your .357 loads. I love .357 from a rifle!

Good to see some fans of the 77/357.

Had the 77/357 out again yesterday, to re-zero the scope after re-mounting it in the rings (lined them w/ vinyl electrical tape).

                          FM 158 gr. FMJ-FP.

                          2 MOA w/ the scope (Leupold VX-1 2-7 X 33mm) set on 2X.

Sighted for 1" high at 50 yards, I was hitting paper plates at 225 yards from field positions using the lower duplex point as the mark.

                          Lots of fun.

I haven't reloaded 357 magnum in awhile, but 180 gr. XTP @ 1800 fps seems like a pretty stout load, right up there in 357 maximum territory.
This must be like one of those "for use in Contender only" loads in the old Speer reloading manual
