The .223 is no good at 1000 yards.

Report by Johnny Fisher Here's something you don't see very often -- a fullbore shooter with a .223 Remington topped a field of talented .308 Win shooters. Not only that, he scored more points than any F-Class competitor (however, F-Classers shot a smaller target).

Ideal? Hell no, but Gill didn't get lucky and 993-56X should tell you all it needs to.

It's doable but extremely difficult. Look at his rig - 90gr bullets and a long barrel. Definitely not a standard .223 rifle assembly.

Unreal. And second places home range too. Makes it more amazing.

The 2015 LR CA State Championship for F T/R was won with a .223 using 90gr VLDs.

If 90 gr VLDs were available, I would build a .223 bolt action and maybe switch barrel it with .308 barrel to shoot F T/R....that's if I ever shoot T/R.

Gill puts in the time necessary to make this happen. Great shooting!

I had one match win with a .223 in F-TR a few years ago using the 82gr Bergers but that was a fluke.

It can be done but it's a tall order to do it as well as Bob did last weekend.

It's not easy, especially from a gas-gun to shoot in F-T/R at that range. Killshot was the 'dealer' who got me hooked on the long game. He knows.

Some serious attention to detail, both on the loading bench and the firing line to make that happen, bravo!

Jim does put in a lot of time at Sac Valley. A "Major" contributor to both ranges.

Yeah, dropping only 7 points and scoring more than 50% in the x ring at a State match on the Coalinga range and beating Jim may be the dictionary definition of extremely difficult, even disregarding cartridge choice. It's a pretty standard fullbore (US) rig, but obviously not standard as far as most people's experience with the .223 is concerned. It is a fantastic achievement, and obviously a testament to Bob and not the .223.

And congrats as well to Niklas Montin, "nimoZ" here, taking the F-TR State Fullbore title.

Nik recently placed 3rd at the Berger Southwest Nationals last month against 92 other F-TR shooters, don't let the short field in Coalinga fool you.

Good luck Nik at this week's Palma championship!
