Winchester 88

Just picked up a Winchester 88, made in 1968 according to the serial number. The rifle seems typical of the type, but the serial number has the suffix "A". Anybody know what that means?

I read it as it could be on either the 88 or the 100

edit: I believe its a misprint. Winchester went to an "A" PREFIX on the 100s and an "H" prefix on the 88s (see the table). He then states there could be an "A" suffix on some rifles and I assume it could be either model

Pretty much the way I see it too, but still doesn't answer the question, "What does the "A" suffix mean?" The lack of the "H" prefix just means that it is a pre-'69 gun..

The A suffix might also have to do with internal Winchester design changes that affect later parts replacement and service procedures. Winchester also came up with "fixes" that service hubs could perform, and they stamped their personal ID mark after the upgrade(s). This would probably not happen with the serial number though.

OP is it a lever or auto?

I have a fair number of Winchester rifles and they have the "A" in common. Although there may be a difference between an "A" prefix and an "A" suffix. I have a Winchester 43 and a Winchester 490 each with an "A" suffix indicating a design change.

I reckon minor design change could account for the "A", just wonder what the change is...

Have you shot your win 88 yet? I picked one up (a 1970) last Dec. Mine has iron sights and I found that I had a lot of glare off the top of the receiver when I was shooting it.

No, just got it, fitted with big awkward Simmons scope, requires neck stretch to see through, something odd about the eye relief or the stock length. Looking to replace it with a Weaver V3...

I have a 50's era 88 in .308. Put a period correct Weaver on it with some Weaver tip-off rings and eye relief is just fine.

How's the trigger on yours? Remember to use slave pins when you disassemble it.

My dad bought a new model 88 (.308) in 1964 when he got out of the Army. He used it a handful of times harvesting elk in Oregon. A few years ago it became mine.

Love this rifle. Sorry, but I have no answer to your question.

I've bought Pugliese's book on the gun, and watched both episodes on dis and reassembly, on you tube..

Trigger seems unremarkable. I've been keeping an eye out for one of the old low power weavers, or perhaps a red dot sight. I live in the woods in the hills of eastern CA, high power scopes no too useful hereabouts..
