That argument lasted for about 24 years in the hunting & fishing magazines of the late 20th century. The 'Elk Porno' magazines always had some new spin on the that particular debate.

IMO both are great hunting rounds and not something that you're going
to be shooting all day at the range.
But rather a rifle\round you take to the range once
a year before a hunting to see if it's still on target.
Pretty good barrel burners with some pressure.

Im not a 7rm fan by any means. I owned one and had issues with it. I shot A LOT of 7wsm and loved it. Something to consider is the new Hornady ELD X and ELD match bullets in 30cal. There BC's are over .650 (the big 30cal offerings; 208, 212, 220). Shooting the 208gr ELD match from a 300win mag at 3k with .670 BC is a nice setup. Ohh and its about 18.00 a box or more less then anything berger offers.

I have a Remington 700 in 7mm Rem mag. It is an awesome rifle and a very good cartridge. It'll do good work. Extremely reliable too.

If I had a 150g 7mm and a 150g 300 mag, wouldn't the 300 do everything the 7mm would, if not more?

In general, if you compare two cartridges with the same powder capacity and same bullet weight, but different bore sizes:
-the bigger bore will push the same weight bullet faster because of the increased surface area in the bore.
-the smaller bore's bullet will have a better BC so it will fly flatter and retain velocity better, ultimately ending up with MORE energy on target once the range exceeds the point where it matches the larger/faster bullet.

From this we learn that (within reason) larger bores are better for shorter range and smaller bores are better for longer ranges.

At 600 yards, the 7mm drops 72.9", the 300 drops 67.2"

With the 175 g Sierra SMK Hodgdon says the 7MM will make 2750 fps and the 300 WM will make 3000 fps

I do not find that this chart relates to my 7mm Rem Mag.
I shoot 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 yard and my rifle does not drop this much.

For some reason, I have never liked the 7mm Rem Mag, probably because when it first came out, it did not do a lot more than a .30-06 since the 175 gr Corelokt bullets were not true spritzers. Since then, the 7mm Mags I've tried kicked more than my .300 Win or .300 Wthby. I can load a heavy .308 bullet and match the BC of the heavy 7mm bullets, and either .300 does everything I need it to and the recoil does not bother me. No sense in shooting a conventional 150 gr bullet from a .300 mag, though the Barnes bullets are tough.
