    280 rem vs 7mm-08 ?

Can you run both 280 rem and 7mm-08 rounds through same barrel ?

Why would you think that you could?

The bullets are the same size. The cartridges are different size. The 280 is a necked down 30-06 and long action. The 7mm-08 is a necked down 308win and is a short action.
      Hope that helps.
      You cannot interchange the cartridges.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

The .280 is actually longer than the 30-06, as far as head space datum goes. If I had to pick one, it would be the 7-08.

You are mixing up the 7mm -08 with the 7mm Express.

In 1979, Remington re-named the 280 Remington the 7mm Express trying to improve sales but found that people mixed it up with the 7mm Remington magnum. So in 1981, Remington changed the name back to the 280 Remington.

The 280 Rem is the 30.06 case necked down to 7mm while the 7mm-08 is a necked down 308 Winchester case. The 280 Rem was given a different headspace measurement so that people wouldn't chamber them in 30.06 rifles.

There is a .052" difference in length.

No! Seriously, why would you even ask that question?

Well, to be completely honest AND pedantic you COULD fire a 7mm-08 in a 280 barrel/chamber. You should probably use a bullet that likes to a good long jump to the lands and good luck reloading that case afterward though...

It turns out that the 308 and 7-08 cases are fatter at the shoulder.
This will alllow them to be jammed tight enough into a 30-06 or 280 chamber so that the primer is able to be fired and then blow out the shoulder and neck of the cartridge to fill the chamber.

                            Go with the 7mm-08.

                            Sir,

I recently purchased 3 bolt guns in 7mm-08 and could not be happier. It is a great hutning caliber up to elk size, fun to shoot and accurate as hell.I am going to use it as my go to cartridge, along with 2 Grendel bolt guns I have coming. A2
