    Tika T-3 Rebarrel ?

I have a Tika T-3 hunter in 308win blued that i shoot a lot [for me] target shooting that has close to 700 rds thru it and Tika dose not offer a replacement barrel for them.

I have a chance to get an unfired take off SS barrel for $150 that i will put away for later after i shoot my barrel out.

Is this a good deal for the price and is there anything i will need to have done to it or my gun to have it replaced later. I'm no gunsmith and just trying to get a cost exspence before purchaseing it.

    Thanks, Steve

Likely wont need to touch it for another 3,000-4,000 rounds

Id save the money for a good barrel/blank. You will have to pay a smith to install it anyway, might as well get a decent tube. But most casual shooters never actually wear out a barrel, so you have some time to figure it out.

Save your pennies while you put some serious rounds down range, by the time you shoot the barrel out you'll want better than factory anyway.

I have sold 10-12 Tikka take off barrels when we were building long range hunting rigs using the Tikka action. I normally sold them for $75.00 each.

I would say when it is time to rebarrel I would get a quality barrel blank and have chambered in the caliber of your choice.

Bogus? Hmm...yeah, cuz I don't be knowing about no Tikka

In case you are not aware...you can't just screw on a "take off" barrel. It will need to be checked for head space and most of the time it will need to be turned down a bit or shimmed to be right.
So the take off barrel is not that great of a deal if you figure having a gunsmith remove your old barrel, and then properly install the new barrel.

It is best to just buy a quality barrel blank and have it chambered and installed on your action.

Oh...and here is a left over take off barrel...$75.00 plus shipping...and a few of the long range hunter packages we put together plus a few of my personal Tikka's.

Tikka barrels are fine, but for the money it's worth upgrading during a rebarrel. $150 barrel and $200 install is close to a $300 barrel and $200 install. Might as well spend the extra money at that point.

take-off barrels typically sell for $50 to $75.
Bolt gun barrels are generally not "plug and play".
A gunsmith MAY need to adjust the barrel for correct headspace when putting it on your receiver.
Figure another $50 to $200 for that work depending on what your gunsmith charges.

Thanks for all your answers to my Questions, For MY needs i think it would be best to just get a takeoff and have it changed over when needed. I'm really not into long range shooting, just targets out to 200-300 yds plus i'm getting ready to try out cast for it and if that works out will use them for hunting.

My choice for that will be the NOE 311-180FN http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/images/...80-FN_(PB).Jpg in the 1600 fps area.

                      Thanks, Steve

$200 to install a $300 barrel blank? Which smiths do it for that amount?

                          I do.

Tear down and re-assemble rifle $40
This service is required for work on any barrel under 20" length or when the barrel will not fit through the lathe headstock or any work on the receiver that can not be completed with the barrel installed.

Barrel Fitting with Plain Muzzle $160
This service is to fit a barrel blank to a bolt action receiver. The barrel is setup in the lathe and dialed in to less than 0.0003" total indicated runout at the chamber end. The barrel is threaded to fit the action. The barrel is timed so that any muzzle runout will end up at 12:00, ensuring that no scope elevation travel is lost in the barrel fitting process. The chamber is roughed out and then bored to within a few thousandths of final diameter to ensure concentricity before reaming the chamber. The chamber is reamed to final dimension with a floating pilot reamer using a pilot that fits the bore as tight as possible. This is most important to ensure the throat is perfectly centered in the bore. This is a true benchrest quality chambering job. It is common for rifles to shoot 1/4 moa with this type of a barrel installation job. This service also includes cutting the barrel to it's finish length. A target crown is cut. A recoil lug needs to be provided by the customer with the receiver.
It's all the other things that people want done that add cost to a rebarrel job.

                          truing the receiver
upgrading to 8-40 scope base screw holes
                          fitting a replacement bolt
tuning a bolt, trigger and cocking piece for optimum fit
opening up the recoil lug for oversized threads
pinning a recoil lug to the receiver
threading the barrel for a muzzle brake
timing a muzzle brake to the barrel
blending the muzzle brake diameter to the barrel
boring the muzzle brake to clear the bullets
sandblasting or glass bead blasting the barrel so it looks nicer

All those things are NOT part of a basic barrel fitting job.

I have a like-new 308 SS take off that you can buy for $75. I also can fit it to your action so it will be ready when you decide to change it out.
