    Which one ~ Rem/Savage/Win/Other?

Buddy asked me the other day what factory heavy barrel "target rifle" he should be looking at, I've only owned older 700's, so I have no clue what manufacture(s) is turning out a quality rifle these days?

    What say you?

Depends what he wants to do, and how much he has to spend. You could go anywhere from $800-4000

If you're talking precision rifles, then the Ruger Precision Rifle is not bad for a entry level.

          Need a LOT more details.
Remington 700's are more customizable than all other makes combined if he is concerned with customizing it.

Didn't get a lot of details ~ He's on a tighter budget and wants a good stock, either factory or aftermarket (HS, B&C, etc) My recommendation was the 700 5R, but have heard/read that Remington isn't quite what they use to be. Haven't heard much about Winchesters or Savage lately (good or bad) That's why I was looking for others insight.

On a budget where he does NOT want to buy another stock, get a 700P.
It already comes with an HS stock.
If he WANTS a different stock, get an SPS Varmint and throw away the injection molded wet noodle that it comes with.

The internet says that a lot.
You REALLY need to qualify your source of information before you believe it...

I rebuild 700's every week and I can say that the newer ones are better made than the older ones.
The 700 5R Milspec with the 24" barrel are usually 1/3moa capable guns right out of the box.

You can't go wrong with most brand names out there. I personally have a 308 Howa 1500 that has since been customized, but was a very nice gun out of the box and shot 3/4 MOA all day. A buddy of mine has a Savage Trophy Hunter and is a pretty nice piece. Remington 700's are very popular for being decently accurate and are very easy to customize. I have a Remington Defense M24 that is pretty sweet. My dad has been shooting a FN PBR for years and that's a great rifle. It all depends on what he wants to do but my vote is with Howa, Remington, Savage and FN only because that is what I have experience with.

Remington 700, LTR if he can find it, PSS or Police are great. Savage FCP is also worth a look. SPS for a real starter. He could always put a great scope on a police and chop the barrel and crown it Had a few 700s and they are all accurate but so was the fcp.

My choices if I had to go stock factory

Ruger RPR in .308 or 6.5 creedmoor
                      Rem 700P or 5R

If I had a lot of money, I would simply do a custom build

                        If we're talking .308, probably 700.

                        6.5? Probably savage.

Remington 700 varriant, Ruger Prescision Rifle, or a Howa 1500 HB.
