    Henry 357 Mares

Is this gun legal in California if bought new? If not then what rules disqualified it?

Back in the heyday of the TV Western, Steve McQueen, the star of "Wanted: Dead or Alive," rode across black-and-white screens toting a sidearm like nothing any lawman or outlaw had carried before. A cut-down, modified version of repeating rifle, this recognizable shootin’ iron could be holstered like a pistol but fired with the speed

Note the banner that says not legal in California or New York.

Not legal, short barrel rifle is the rule that makes it so, if I am not mistaken.

That's weird because I saw one for sale at Gun Effects in Industry like 6 months ago. I held it and everything.

No, these are classified as pistols. As such, they are subject to the roster. Some folks got them when SSE1 was around - the mag tube was blocked with a wood dowel and they were single shot exempt. You may find some FFL using SSE2 to bring them in as 'bolt action' - but it is sort of a gray area since a lever operated bolt is commonly called a 'lever action' not 'bolt action'. And of course it is legal to have them gifted by out of state direct family, and also people can move here with them.

If you don't have out of state parent/grandparent/child to gift you one - you can get them from private sellers in a PPT. I have one in 22S/L/LR - good times.

You might ask Baboosh for some help if you really want one, he seems like the right FFL that would step up and make this happen. Rossi makes one too.

I'd have to have a red dot on it.

You can sse them, try oc firearms. I just shot a Rossi mares leg yesterday and the sights are way off, just looks cool but not that fun or practical to shoot. Only bought it cause I'm a lever action guy and it was under 300 bucks.

This is legal because its a pistol not a rifle. They are pretty fun to shoot.
