As easy as that can be, I think a solid clamp would be nice. Just in case you ever want to reverse it back to Semi.

I know who Randall is (I read the Gunsmithing & How To subforum a lot). Follow the link: "We are not accepting orders for custom barrels or complete uppers at this time."

Nguyen raises my concerns about that. I'll keep it in mind as a last resort.

Just put a setscrew into the gas hole of the gas block. Done. Use a coarse thread setscrew.

Doesn't an adjustable gas block require a tool to use? Isn't that the same as using a setscrew in the gas port? Is that any less risky than no gas system at all?

I would imagine, since you can use tools to un-fix your mag, or use tools to remove the fixed mag release and put a standard mag release, that you can use tool to turn the gas off? Assuming it's not adjustable by hand, it carries about the same risk, no?

OR, just take the gas port off entirely, leaving the hole right there in the barrel venting up every shot?

Plenty of ported pistol barrels out there. I think there's even a picture of our President firing a shotgun with a ported barrel....

Not all adjustable gas blocks require a tool to adjust. Also, it's an unnecessary risk that will never have anyone at the CA DOJ give their blessing to. If the OP's wallet deep enough for a legal fight he can make that decision for himself.

He could use standard cap mags then though, which IMO is a big advantage.

One could thread the hole in the gas block for the tube, and set screw that. No issues then.

One could also have a barrel profiled and the extension fit. No worries about clocking or locating the gas port hole, since it won't be there.

                    Simplifies the process a bit.

I want to do it so my son can shoot it. With a adjustable stock, he can grown with the gun no problem. Putting a straight pull action on it, keeps him from rapid firing the rifle, but makes it easy for him to reload.

Not the same at all. Do searches for convictions with "broken" assault weapons. You can be changed and convicted without your firearm even operable. The tool to remove a mag is specifically in the AW regulations, there is nothing similar for a tool to get you in and out of AW status.

Im thinking of using a barrel with no gas port or using a plug pinned into the gas block on a standard barrel so a gas tube cant be used and modding the gas key on the carrier so the gas tube would not go in.

Depending on what sights you are running, and where the front is mounted, you could just have someone make a ring/sleeve with setscrew(s) to hold it in place. That way there isn't even a question, as no exit hole that could ever be considered a gas port.

Black hole makes barrels to order and are fairly well respected, they I'm sure can make you one without gas port.

                                Based on this statement:

no hole drilled in the barrel is the only way I can think of to have a detach mag featured AR-15 not be a "broken assault weapon". Every other idea pitched here would seem to simply be a broken AW.

pinned gas block? it's broken. Replace it. AW.
                                Modified bolt? replace it. AW.
adjusted gas block, even with tools? Adjust it. AW.

Only a no hole barrel could be argued as "never AW to begin with, so it cannot be broken"

                                (only incomplete)
