First groups from a beginner shooter...6.5 creedmoor

So my sister out of the blue, asks me to take her out shooting. She knows I have been in the competition scene for the last year for F-Class and wanted to see what it was all about. It was raining so I did not bring out the F-Class stuff, but I did let her shoot my tactical 6.5 creedmoor rifle. Before this, she was shooting my wife's AR and had no problems with that and was printing 6-8 inch, 10-20 shot groups at 100 yards...with Wolf

Then, I brought out the bolt action to the table. I gave her the run down on the trigger, sight picture, how to hold the gun, etc. She loaded her first round and it took some time for her to finally get on the trigger. When she did, her very first 3-shot group was below. Not too shabby for a barrel with over 1,800 rounds down it. As a sidenote, I took the gun home and it has been about 150 rounds since I cleaned it so I went and got the barrel clean. I borescoped it and the first 8 inches of the barrel is all firecracked and there was copper deposits in the firecracking that even JB could not get out. This barrel is on its last legs, but I'll keep shooting it until it starts to open up over 1/2" (when I shoot it ).

I really try to get people out and show them that guns are not bad, they can be fun for recreation and sport and it is not what the gun-grabbers want you to think. And...don't give your new shooter a 338LM or 44mag or something that will beat the crap out of them. Get the best shooting, lightest recoiling rifle or handgun and let them have fun. You'll make a shooter for life and when they hear the news about "assault rifles" and how no one should own a "military style weapon," they'll think twice about believing them or listening to their rhetoric.

I've been hinting to my fiance that she should try some precision shooting. I think she would be really good at it and would like to build up a nice target 10/22 for her with a green laminated stock. Once I get more rounds through my RPR I'll bring her out to try 600-1,000 yard steel targets. Unfortunately when trying to explain the slightly more technical aspects of it her eyes just glaze over.

And I agree about bring new people out as we all do, here. It's nice to show them that there are indeed legitimate purposes for even the more scary looking guns.

Yup, this very same gun was the gun my friend used to shoot his first Palma F-Tactical division match at Sac Valley. The highlight of his day was at the 1,000 yard line, during record shots, he had a 3-shot X-ring group that printed probably 3-inches....and he was holding off into space in the 7-ring 10 o'clock position (because he didn't want to touch my scope ).

              Nice Shooting!Very nice Rifle!
I'm trying to get my wife and daughter to try some precision shooing with my AR and Ruger Precision.
The waking up early to go to Sac Valley is a problem for them though.

Yeah, that's the hard part for me too. I have to get up at 4am to get to Sac Valley in time for check-in.

The internet told me that 6.5 Creedmoors last 3000-5000 rounds before you need to replace the barrel.

I get up at 5 to make the Safety Brief, 200 miles round trip. Worth every mile of driving to shoot on such a nice 1,000yd range.

I wish...I would have actually retired this barrel a long time ago if I was really competing with it. Luckily, I have a barrel ready to go by you, so it's all good.

Many of the guys I shoot with in F-Open retire barrels for major matches after 900-1000 rounds
