So my sister out of the blue, asks me to take her out shooting. She knows I have been in the competition scene for the last year for F-Class and wanted to see what it was all about. It was raining so I did not bring out the F-Class stuff, but I did let her shoot my tactical 6.5 creedmoor rifle. Before this, she was shooting my wife's AR and had no problems with that and was printing 6-8 inch, 10-20 shot groups at 100 yards...with Wolf
Then, I brought out the bolt action to the table. I gave her the run down on the trigger, sight picture, how to hold the gun, etc. She loaded her first round and it took some time for her to finally get on the trigger. When she did, her very first 3-shot group was below. Not too shabby for a barrel with over 1,800 rounds down it. As a sidenote, I took the gun home and it has been about 150 rounds since I cleaned it so I went and got the barrel clean. I borescoped it and the first 8 inches of the barrel is all firecracked and there was copper deposits in the firecracking that even JB could not get out. This barrel is on its last legs, but I'll keep shooting it until it starts to open up over 1/2" (when I shoot it
).
I really try to get people out and show them that guns are not bad, they can be fun for recreation and sport and it is not what the gun-grabbers want you to think. And...don't give your new shooter a 338LM or 44mag or something that will beat the crap out of them. Get the best shooting, lightest recoiling rifle or handgun and let them have fun. You'll make a shooter for life and when they hear the news about "assault rifles" and how no one should own a "military style weapon," they'll think twice about believing them or listening to their rhetoric.
