Where Can I Try One Out

I'm thinking about getting a Tikka T3 in .243 Winchester for coyote hunting. They're nice and light with a silky smooth action but they work a bit differently than my .30-06 so I'd like to try one before I buy.

The dumb question is, are there dealers or ranges in Northern California who have a selection of long guns for this purpose? If so, the next question is, how do I track them down?

I doubt you will find something that specific to try out unless you know someone with one.

What exactly are you planning to learn by trying it? It won't be set up for you anyway.

They are really nice, smooth, accurate bolt guns. They work.

I know some indoor ranges that have a selection of bolt guns to rent in Southern Cal, but they are usually Rugers, Savages, or Remingtons in standard calibers (223, 308). Best bet would be to find someone at a range with one and start a friendly conversation.

If you get my way you can try mine. I have 2 of them 7mm-08 and 6.5X55. They are not a 243 but I will not own a 243 so that is what I have.

What exactly are you planning to learn by trying it?

How the firearm operates at the best approximation of field conditions I can get without actually buying one and taking it on a hunt. Holding one in a gun store told me the action operated as advertised. It was light and felt nicely balanced. I don't doubt the reviews that say it shoots well and I'm sure I can shoot it well enough for the way I want to use it. Maybe I'll find out that I really like it and maybe I'll find out I really hate it.

To give you an example, while I've been successful with the Winchester 670 in .30-06 I currently own, the one thing I hate about it is the design of the safety, which can catch on clothing and unexpectedly not be safe any more. My buddy's Remington 700 has a better safety design that doesn't catch on clothing. I've also had the bolt come loose without realizing it.
