Scopes for heavy barrel .308 bolt action?

I bought an older Ruger bolt action in .308 and was thinking about pigs for supper. Any thoughts? I'm leaning to something higher than 3-9; maybe 4-12. Tell me what you have on your heavy barreled bolt actions. Thanks

If your intention is hunting 4 legged pigs, go with a lower power scope,
    Here is my pig gun:

The scope is a 1-3x and I leave it on 1x.
If there is a NEED for more magnification, you have the TIME to turn the magnification up, but when there is a NEED for more magnification, you won't have the time to turn the magnification down.

3-9x is plenty for hunting pretty much any game animal. Most of by he time you will be on 3x anyway. A fixed power 4x or 6x is my favorite for game animals out to 500 yards.

        I don't have a heavy barreled .308, but I do hunt.

        Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42.
It usually sits on 10x because I almost always forget to turn it down after sighting in.
It's not terribly expensive, it's been dependable, it's easy to adjust, it hasn't gotten in my way.

I use a Steiner 4-16. However, I usually have it in the 8-10 range when I hunt in the open. Less in heavily wooded. I only use the higher power, above 10X, for load development. I honestly think you don't need anything past 12X max for hunting in California. 12X may even be too much. JMO

Leupold 3X9X40 or 3.5X10X40 duplex reticle.
1st it is a 308.(which is an excellent cartridge but not usually used for 600 yard shots at game) 2nd it is for hunting and you rarely shoot over 300 yards. Heck most game is taken within 100 yards. 3rd You need a lower power for close and/or running shots.

Not sure way you would want to carry a bull barreled rifle hunting? Unless you are only in a stand and not spot and stalk. You must not have done much real hunting. Most all hunters are trying to get/use lighter rifles for most hunting.

One of my favorites is a Vortex Viper 2-7x32 with the Versa-Plex reticle.

                  Perfect power and reticle combo.

I believe they discontinued this model, but you may still be able to find it somewhere.

For my pig gun, bought a Vortex Strike Eagle, 1-6X, and it seems like a very nice scope. Illuminated reticle, BDC, nice long eye relief, not very heavy, standard Vortex warranty, relatively inexpensive for the features. Worth a look IMO.

I am definitely not carrying that heavy barrel too far so I think I'll sit and wait and do lots of scouting. I'll be shooting targets more but I think it will serve its purpose. I have a Marlin 30/30 for my main hunting rifle. Thanks for the great input.

I think it really depends on were you're hunting the pigs. If your jumping them or in dense oaks, then ya, really low power, but if your glassing and shooting you might opt for more. It really depends on the topography and style your

I drug a heavy barrel Rem700 antelope hunting in Wyoming. Great for long shots; it is a tack driver with handloads out past 500 yards. Sucked to carry but we did not hike too far. We did a lot more hiking when hunting deer. Really sucked...

Would definitely consider that. Definitely consider a high quality comfortable sling...

Even on long shots, I hardly used the 3x9 scope turned up. In fact, it was a liability; had a great shot on a close deer(less than 50 yards). Dang hard to get on moving target at that distance with the scope turned up. Got that deer, but from then on I left the scope turned to 3x...

Get a decent pair of binoculars for glassing...

FWIW, that heavy barrel Rem700 is my favorite rifle. It's just heavy to carry...
